I had to chip out the joint between my patio walkway and the adjoining wall due to cracking. This Closed Cell Backer Rod, fit perfectly and filled the gap. I followed up using Sika self leveling expansion joint caulk to finish off the joint and then painted the caulking. This backer rod saved me the time and cost of totally filling in the expansion joint.

Backer Rod did it's job. The compressible material filled the void in my concrete driveway and i was then able to fill the void with flowable sealant. The backer rod saved me a considerable amount of sealant that otherwise would have kept flowing down into the open void. Instructions were helpful on the packaging. I was wondering how i would fill a void greater than 3/4" until i read on the package that two strands of the backer rod could be twisted together to fill larger joints. It worked! I also split about 10 feet of one backer rod with a scissors to accommodate a narrower joint.

The good stuff don't come cheap! This backer rod is a bit more expensive than the other (smaller) backer rod options offered in store. But when you need to fill larger gaps (like for concrete expansion joints and cracks) this is your best option. TIP: If your backer rod fits snug, then you use less caulk. And the Sika caulk costs more than the backer rod. Make sure that you backer rod sits all the way down below the surface of the concrete before you start caulking. It doesn't hurt to "dryfit" the backer rod first so that you can determine if there are any high spots. Then remove the backer rod from the joint, and dig out additional dirt or shave the backer rod in that area to get it to the right height before you caulk. You can also use a 5-in-1 tool or a putty knife to push the backer rod all the way into place in those snug applications.

    Make sure it’s tight!
Someone mentioned it before but if its not tight it will DEFINITELY rise to the surface. Especially on the ends. It'll come out looking ugly and you’ll have to use more sealant to fix it. I combatted this by putting the backer rod in then drizzling a small bead over it down the length of the joint. Leave it for a day and it’ll be adhered in place. Go back and fill it in, no floating!

These Sealant products are excellent. The only problem is that several sealants are hard to squeeze (unable to flow). It might be due to materials harden and deposit in the tube. They need to control the flow quality. In general, this product is a great product to buy for the driveway sealing application.

Hello and thank you for being a Sika customer! Expiration dates must be checked before the product is purchased. The expiration date is on the plunger, opposite from the nozzle. Also, it is important to check the cartridge for damage. SikaRetail
