Questions & Answers

Can this be used outdoors on a privacy fence?

I need to reduce noise from a neighboring yard. And plan to apply an acoustic barrier to the 6.5' high wood fence to accomplish this. Will it handle weather and rain?
Asked by: YardMan
No It cannot - product will degrade in the sun over time with excessive UV. It can however serve as a a very good acoustic barrier if you sandwich it between plywood boards on your side and the fence itself , since this will also protect the material from the sun. Good luck

Can I installed it under siding?
Asked by: JK
Yes you can. In my area it served as a vapor barrier but my primary purpose for getting it was to have a thermal break between the studs (steel home).

how well will this work between floors?

I have a house with a walk out basement. Obviously with no insulation between the floors sounds travels. So as the finished floor is already down upstairs can I put this downstairs glued on the bottom of the upstairs floor joists and then cover with 1/2 " sheetrock, or should I use something else and if yes what should I use?
Asked by: fiys
This product is perfect for this application since it is one of the thinnest and most effective DIY priced Thermal / Acoustic mats you can buy. Product can yes easily be hung from the underside of your floor joist simply using a staple gun every 18-24" . You will then YES have to install Gypsum or any other Fire rated surface ( like plywood or OSB ) over it to comply with fire code requirements. It is an R3.1 rated product and will also offer substantial sound deadening ( Delta 20 ) . Last but not least product has a radiant barrier reflective layer on one face which should be directed towards the side that you want to retain heat on. In this case silver side should face upwards towards the existing floor to retain heat in that area. Good Luck HC

can I staple this to a wall inside a utility closet?

I dont want to replace the drywall but my central a/c and heat put noise into my living room. No one goes into the closet where the heat/ac unit is located. The central a/c heat make a lot of noise coming thru to the tv room. The utility room is inside my condo - no outdoor issues. This product cost less than the panels for acoustic insulation. Thank you!!!

Can this product be stapled to framing before installing sheetrock between joining room to serve as sound barrier?

It's over the garage, and I could feel a draft coming from somewhere in the floor (I think) this past winter. We just put in laminate flooring, and thought that this product would help us keep out the cold. We won't know if it really works in a cold barrier capacity until it starts to get cold, but it is definitely thicker than the foam underlayment we have used in other parts of the house. The only thing that I wasn't crazy about was the smell- kind of like cigarette smoke. Luckily we can't detect the smell through the laminate floor. One other thing: Be careful walking on it with sneakers while putting down your floor. It rips pretty easily. We did one row of underlayment, covered it to almost the end before putting down the next row.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Condo required Required by condo association for reduction of noise transmission. This product was available through Home Depot and fit the requirement. However Home Depot was not familiar with the product and could not recommend how to install it. Called the manufacturer for information and they recommended a different installation mefhod than the one supplied with the product. The product is easy to install but not really sure how it will hold up under ceramic tile. Hope it was the right choice.
