Can this go between layers of drywall ? I am thinking of covering an existing basement celling then installing a layer of 5/8 drywall over this product.
Asked by: TC
You CAN do that although I’m not sure the product was intended for that use. This is an under lament and not just a soundproofing. This helps keep the floors quiet when walked on and help sound transmission from below. Mass loaded vinyl would be a better material to use. The STC for this is 68 and mass loaded vinyl is 90.

ceramic tile application

How much grout is applied over underlayment befor placement of ceramic tile?
Asked by: wayne
This does not sound like a good idea. Tile needs a solid, firm surface to avoid any movement and cracking of the thin set. I can not believe you will get this from grout placed on the underlayment. You can get this from cement board. That board must be firmly secured to the floor with screws in a wood floor or cement/masonry nails on cement.

Customer Reviews

Thermoquiet 500 sq. ft. 4 ft. x 125 ft. x 1/8 in. 5 in 1 Thermal Acoustic Insulated Underlayment is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Used in basement This was a great product that we used in our basement. Easy to roll out and stick to each row, easy to cut to fit and took very little time to do. I would recommend. The only reason why I’m going it a four is because, for a basement, it’s not as warm as I was hoping it would be (we put laminate flooring over the underlay). It’s still a great product, especially for the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from We bought 2 500 sq ft rolls and a 250... We bought 2 500 sq ft rolls and a 250 sq ft roll of the SilentSilver Thermoquiet underlayment. What arrived was a new design of the underlayment that is totally different from the Amvic Youtube video that demonstrates the installation of this material. The paper tape covering the glue strip was on the opposite side of the roll. We finally determined that we had to start the job laying the material from left to right, not right to left that was described in the video. In rolling out 25 foot lengths, we could keep one side straight and taut while the other side had rolls making it impossible to lay flat. We tried using extra double sided tape but on some lengths we had to slice the roll where it was badly "bubbled" up and removed a section of the material to get it to lay flat. There were no instructions for installation with the material. The web site had no help and no one to contact. We have no experience with other brands, so we don't know if others are just as difficult to work with. The finished floor was a good base to put our laminate flooring on. We think the company needs to update the Youtube demo and supply some instructions and look into the quality control of their product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy installation Easy to install. Seems to provide good sound barrier. Was used with LV plank flooring between 2 rental units (lower/upper) in effort to cut down on noise transfer. Fairly strong odor upon initial installation despite open windows. We would use it again if replacing flooring.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Underaly Installed on concrete in a basement under laminate floor. Area to be used as a home gym and Yoga room so we wanted the R value offered by this product. Went down very well. Purchased a 125' roll and a 25' roll to minimize joints. Laid one length at a time, installed laminate as far as possible over the laid down section before installing the next length. The material will damage if you walk on it with shoes, that is why we laid down one length at a time and just walked on it in sock feet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good stuff Easy to cut and lay. Only two problems I had with it was that the top blue layer tears very easily, so just be careful when you walk on it. And secondly, but most importantly (to me) there was about 10-15 feet on each roll that couldn't be used because it was all jacked up. Separated layers and bunched up layers from the manufacturing process, but other than that it seems like pretty good stuff.

It flexes and breaks the grout, and we had to rip it out as a result which was extremely costly. Very poor instructions for this application. Go with other brands that are specifically designed for using under tile.
