I want to use these SimTek privacy fence gates as lockable pedestrian side gates. Is there appropriate hardware available?
Asked by: MI
Hi MI, my name is Adam. I represent SimTek Fence. In answer to your question, yes, the hardware that is included with the purchase of the gate will allow you to lock the gate on both sides. Thank you for shopping Home Depot and thank you for asking about our product. Have a great day.

do they offer a 4ft tall gate ?
Asked by: REX
Rex; Now that is a great question. I know they have the four foot walls, as I have seen them at a hotel project that was put up a couple of years ago around me. The Hotel project did not have a gate, merely an opening in the fencing. I would go to your local Home Depot store's Commercial Desk and they will be able to look that up for you or make contact with the folks at Simtek (the manufacturer). My local Home Depot was terrific with my fencing project and special order needs. The folks at Simtek are also terrific if you need anything as far as replacement parts, post sleeves, etc. Once completed, you will love the fencing. We have so many folks wanting to discuss our fencing and where we purchased it, my wife and I should get a referral fee. It has been a few years now, and our fencing has some moss growing on it and every year starts to look more and more like real stone. Because of this, I don't dare power wash it. Good luck with your fencing project.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I have now installed both the Ashland fence at my sister's home and the Ecostone at my own place.... I have now installed both the Ashland fence at my sister's home and the Ecostone at my own place. When I installed the Ashland gate at sister's place, it measured an actual 72" tall. It wasn't an injection molded gate, it has a plastic molded C channel screwed/riveted around what is nothing more than ripped down fence panel. Very shoddy construction and has a noticeable bow to it as do many of the panels and posts, however, it measured an actual 72". Nonetheless, I liked the fence enough that I went ahead with the install of the Ecostone at my home shortly after. I ordered a gate along with 21 panels to finish off one section of yard with problem neighbors and angry pit bulls. This Ecostone gate is much nicer and actually molded as a gate and not the shoddy C channel construction like the Ashland gate was. Nowhere on any website did it list the gate as anything but 72". A few weeks later I received my back ordered gate and found the time to install it. Upon dry fitting the gate i came to find that the Ecostone gate doesn't measure 72" like the Ashland gate did, but a much shorter 67"! Careful planning was used to ensure the posts were set to achieve approximately 3" margin underneath the fence specifically to allow proper clearance for gate swing. Grade planning is critical and must be taken into consideration before posts heights are set because Simtek specifically states that cutting the top of posts will void your warranty. Due to grade variations this 67" gate leaves it close to 10" off the ground in one corner, it looks ridiculous and does nothing to prevent angry pit bulls from getting in my yard. Had I known this gate was going to hang that high off the ground I would never have installed a gate here, I would have just gone with another fence panel. Of course, now two gate posts are set in concrete and changing to a fence panel cannot be achieved without a considerable amount of time and money. I noticed this site does now list the 4x6' gate as measuring 69-1/2" tall. Yet, mine measures 67" ? ? ? Even that extra 2-1/2" would help, but I'd really like to see a 72" gate. How about it, Simtek....can you make an actual 72" gate? Please. Overall, the fence looks nice despite the gate that allows critters to get in and out of my yard with ease. Take note, the fence panels varied in height on sister's Ashland as much as 2", making it impossible to keep the top and bottom elevations of panels consistent, simply unacceptable on a fence that cost over $11k in materials alone. The height variations on the Ecostone wasn't as bad, however, I purchased extra panels in anticipation of various heights and returned the ones that were too far out of spec. Another heads up, is that these panels do not like reflections of Low E windows on them. My fence is about 6' from 2 windows that reflect LOTS of sunlight. The windows produce a concentrated reflection similar to sunlight through a magnifying glass. A few days after panel install I went out to cut the lawn and noticed that the panels that absorb most of the reflection had bowed considerably. I put a straightedge on the panel and they were bowed outward as much as 3" in spots. I had to install an unsightly light blocking screen on the exterior of those windows to keep about 6 panels from completely distorting in the summer sun. Had I known this beforehand, I would've looked at another type of fence. It looks like Simtek has recently been purchased by Certainteed. Let's hope they can iron out the quality control issues and maybe add some actual 72" gates to their catalog. If you plan to go with a Simtek fence carefully weigh the pros and cons before spending the coin. This is by no means a cheap fence. If you go this route, I would highly recommend purchasing several extra posts and panels, as some of the them were bowed so badly they couldn't be used. Just be mindful of restocking fees as these are considered special order at many retailers.

The first problem is that the gate is too heavy for the specified gate post. The post simply can not hold the weight of the gate. The sway when opening the gate pulls the gate post out of true. If you're going to make a quality gate, you need a quality gate post. The second problem is phone support. The gentlemen I was transferred to when my Texas rep wasn't available was some condescending college kid who was ZERO help when speaking with myself and my contractor. Do Not Buy from Simtek till their quality and their service improves.

The gate is not however designed well. There is a metal shaft that runs on the inside of the gate that the hinges bolts into. One of the bolts would not screw in easily. There is a nut that is welded to the bolt and it snapped. I had to use a crescent wrench which I attached to the hinge body to turn it... major pain. The second problem I ran into is that the metal shaft is not attached and there is a 1" gap that allows the shaft to move around. I measured the 50.5" as required but the gate leaned too much into the other side because it had one inch to travel inside. I fixed this by pushing the shaft as far as it could go toward the center of the gate, drilled pilot holes into the side and drove tap screws into the shaft over the top and bottom of each hinge bolt. I hope this helps anyone dealing with installing the gate. BTW, you will need to drill pilot holes when attaching the hinge to the post. The metal here is very hard here. Use a 5/32" cobalt drill bit. It broke my black oxide drill bit on the first attempt.
