Product Overview

  • Designed for compatibility with Simpson Strong-Tie connectors
  • Suitable for use in tight spaces
  • Hex head design reduces chances of stripping
The Strong-Drive SD Connector screw is specifically designed to replace nails in certain Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and is the only screw approved for that application. The load-rated SD screw has been tested and approved for use in many popular Simpson Strong-Tie products. In certain applications screws are easier and more convenient to install than nails, and the single-fastener load values achieved by the SD screw exceed those of typical 10d common or 16d common nails. In addition, the galvanized coating makes the SD screw ideal for interior and most exterior conditions.
  • Tested and approved for use in many of Simpson Strong-Tie's best-selling connectors for both interior and most exterior applications
  • Ideal for use in connector applications where more control is desired or using a hammer is inconvenient
  • Shank is specifically designed to match the fastener holes in Simpson Strong-Tie connectors
  • Patented serrated threads and sharp point make driving easy
  • Optimized heat treating for ductility and strength
  • The single-fastener load capacity of the SD10 exceeds that of the 16d common nail
  • Hex driver included
  • Mechanically galvanized, Class 55 coating meets the requirements for use in preservative-treated and fire-retardant-treated wood per the 2012 and 215 IRC
  • Quantity: 100
  • Common project applications: remodeling, fencing, storage, cabinets, framing

Questions & Answers

Do these screws come with a bit to screw them in

Asked by: Bman
Yes it does.

Are these truly self-drilling? Meaning no pre-drilling hole is necessary? Will wood crack if i do not pre-drill?

Will they drill through holes on all Simpson StrongTie bracces? Some holes look smaller than screw shank.
Asked by: SushiBreath
absolutely. Unless its an exotic wood like mahogany, these will predrill itself into the wood. Stay away from getting to close to corners and knots and you shouldn't have a problem.

Simpson Strong-Tie #10 1-1/2 in. External Hex Flange Hex-Head Structural-Connector Screw (100-Pack) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 328.

I was driving these into 1-1/2" pressure treated boards and 2 of the first 7 screws snapped apart where the threads end on the shaft. That left me with 2 screw sections inside the board and having to scrap the board. I was using a 20v hand drill with it set for screws so the clutch would slip if the screws hit something but it was to no avail. They may be OK with fir or pine that is not pressure treated but definitely not a good choice for a structural connection that you cannot afford to have fail.

I used these to re-build a 16x16 shed I bought from a friend and tore apart to move. These are strong and have a solid, tight bite. I’m confident they have reestablished the structural integrity lost when cutting the shed apart. I also used the 3” ones on the main sections.

They screw in easily with a drill and don't need a pilot hole (softwood lumber).I have a bunch left over for a future project.
