Questions & Answers

Are these suitable for treated lumber?

For securing posts on an 8' deck (secured to the house).
Asked by: Will
The CBSQ44-SDS2 has our standard G90 galvanized finish which provides a low level of corrosion protection. This base is also available hot-dip galvanized (CBSQ44-SDS2HDG) which provides a medium level of corrosion protection, or by special order in stainless steel (CBSQ44SS) which provides a high level of corrosion protection. Please see the "Corrosion" section of our website to determine the recommended finish for your condition based on factors including environment, type of treated wood being used, amount of chemical present, etc. Thank you!

orientation of base for fence

For a fence that is fixed at one end, how does one orient this product in order to minimize lateral wobble? When inserting them into the concrete, are the plates oriented along the axis that the fence runs, or perpendicular? Just to be sure we understand each other, if the plates are mounted perpendicular to the running of the fence, they are visible on the face of the fence post as one stands back from the fence. The mounting bolts would then also be perpendicular to the running of the fence and the end of the bolt and nut would stick out on one side. thanks for any help

The CBSQ44-SDS2.5 is only rated for vertical loads (uplift and download) and is not recommended for non top-supported installation. Non top-supported structures such as railings, unbraced carports, fences, arbors etc. need to resist lateral loads such as wind, earthquake, climbing kids, people leaning, etc. at the top. Those lateral loads at the top of post translate to significant moment loads at the bottom. We do not have a base or other connector rated to resist these moment loads. The E-Z Base products (FPBB44, FPBS44, FPBM44E) are the only bases we offer that are intended specifically for fence applications though they are not load rated and it would be up to the Designer to evaluate the suitability of the base for the specific application. Thank you!

Can this be used as the post base for free standing pergola?

The description say "Not recommended for non top support application". Does that mean that only structure attached to the house can use this hardware, or it's safe to use it for free standing trellis/pergola in Northern California as well?

Non top-supported structures such as unbraced carports, railings, fences, arbors etc. need to resist lateral loads such as wind, earthquake, climbing kids, people leaning, etc. at the top. Those lateral loads at the top of post translate to significant moment loads at the bottom. We do not have a base or other connector designed/rated to resist these moment loads. If the free standing pergola is braced against this rotation, then the bases would be an option. It would be up to the Designer to specify the appropriate connector based on framing layout, demand loads, local building codes, etc. Thank you!

I needed to get my deck posts out of the dirt so they will not rot, The Strong-Ties are exactly what I wanted and I got them from Home Depot by ordering on line. Perfect fix for my problem and much more solid than a cedar post that will rot after a few years.
