I have two different 4x4 that I am trying to bring together at a single point. They will need to connect to another 4x4 beam running perpendicular to the two coming together, forming a "+" shape. Can this be bent at the middle to allow for a 90 degree connection?
Asked by: dmen
This cap is designed to connect a vertical 4x4 post to a horizontal beam. Usually a 3 1/2" by 8" or 10. Best to get on the strong tie website to find the correct connector for your application.

What is the capacity of this connector?
Asked by: emac
The AC6 is a Min/Max connector which means it has a rated capacity with a minimum amount of fasteners used (round holes filled) and a rated capacity with a maximum amount of fasteners used (round and triangle holes filled). The minimum capacities are 1,430 lbs. uplift and 715 lbs. lateral and the maximum capacities are 2,500 lbs. uplift and 1,070 lbs. lateral. All capacities are based on Douglas Fir or Southern Pine lumber and have been increased for wind or earthquake with no further increase allowed; reduce where other load durations govern. Thank you!

retrofiting

My existing posts already have 2 x 4 wood strips attached to them and the beam running vertically. How would I go about installing these post caps? Or should I just use large 'L' brackets on the other sides? Thanks FB
Asked by: Viper
The cap is sized to fit directly to a 6x post therefore it could not be used if there are other members attached to the side of the post. It would be up to the Designer to specify whether this type of cap is needed, or if an "L" bracket is an option. Thank you!

Liked them because it give the bench a cleaner look. Would have liked to see the post cap a little thicker. But work just well. Used other pieces too. I would use them again. Once bench was assembled it was plenty strong.
