I want to install a hanger for a 2X10 joist on a 2X10 ledger for a deck. Can I use this hanger? In the product info it says: "Install with 16d common nails in the header and 10dx1-1/2 in. nails in the joist." A 16d common nail is almost 3" inches long, it would go all the way thru the ledger and into the wall behind the ledger.
Asked by: OpenMind
It will certainly do the job, but may be an overkill for just a 2x10 on a deck. These are made from very thick sheet metal designed to carry a lot more load and there for recommended nails are such as you are stating. You can find a thinner hanger for 2x10 on the shelf in home depot that will require shorter nails and should be enough for your project, of course unless your deck is huge and your 2x10 is 15 to 20 ft long, then I would go with this one.

Regarding all strong tie hangers etc, are your screw fasteners stronger than using 16d nails?

Regarding all strong tie hangers etc, are your screw fasteners stronger than using 16d nails?
Asked by: Louis
The Strong-Drive SD Connector screw is specifically designed to replace nails in *certain Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and is the only screw approved for that application. The single-fastener load capacity of the SD10 exceeds the capacity of the 16d common nail. Thank you! *not all - please visit our website for a list of connectors approved for installation with the SD screw.

Is the 2" opening actually 2" or is it 1 1/2"? Trying to hang boards that measure 1 3/4". The ones I bought measured 1 1/2" and would not work.
Asked by: Fishwood
The HU28TF is sized for a nominal 2x member (1 1/2" actual). For 1 3/4" lumber, please see the rough 2x hangers or those sized for 1 3/4" LVL. Thank you!
