Yes, a 2 x 12 is the size of the wood before removal of the bark sawing and drying of the lumber, thus after milling the final piece of wood is 1 1/2 x 11 1/4. Mike

We size and rate our hangers based on dry lumber. The sizes are based on industry standards of what is typical for shrinkage when the lumber dries. Thank you!

Simpson Strong-Tie manufactures our top-flange hangers to be approximately 1/8” shallower than the specified joist depth. The joist depth will shrink as the moisture content drops after installation. Having the top of the joist slightly higher than the ledger or header allows the joist to remain flush or slightly higher than the header after shrinkage has occurs. Thank you!
