The Stimpson standard is not to place the end of the LSC bracket nearer than 3 1/2 " from the edge of the rim joist. I suspect that the reason for the minimum distance to to insure that there is sufficient wood in the joist above the bracket so that the joist does not split when the stair stringers are loaded up. Following Stimpson standards is my recommendation for installation. '

One per stringer and bend in the middle. Pretty slick

Can this be used for a 2x20 stringer? The steps are extra deep, 16" deep to be exact. So a 20" deep stringer is needed.

so by "16 inches deep" you mean rise of the step, you should be checking your local code to avoid a rebuild of those steps. No code no worries.

The connectors will hold up 2 x 10 stringers. However, for 36" wide stairs, you must use 3 or, even better 4 stringers.

Will these work with 4x12 stringers? Could I use 2 each per stringer to increase load capability?...

Yes. I used them on a handicap ramp. However, I also had placed a 2x6 treated beam beneath all stringers and fastened each end to 4x4 treated post with 1/4" stainless steel lag bolts to hold them in place. Any load imposed is transferred to the posts. For footings I used ABS 10-in Composite Footing Pads. The ramp is not attached to my home so I went with a 30" footing depth not 42". That made it easier to install the footing pads properly.

Simpson Galvanized Stringer Connectors worked well in attaching the stair stringers to the deck frame of my back porch. It is important to use galvanized joint nails with them for proper strength and durability. My porch turned out very well. It is a bit tricky getting the height of the stairs just right though, so take some extra time planning and measuring before driving the nails in, and make sure that you have an assistant to help you hold the stringer in place.
