will a rough sawn 2x6 fit in this ? or is it only for 1-1/2" dimensional lumber

The LUC26Z is sized for a nominal 2x member (2x6 or 2x8); 1 1/2" actual width. It is not intended for rough lumber. Thank you!

You MIGHT be able to use them on a little bit wider wood, but they are made for wood that is 1 1/2 inches wide. 1 3/4” wide is “pushing” the limit. A 2 x 4 or other “2 bys” are are really closer to 1 1/2 “ wide.

Are there approved flat head screw options for fastening to the header so that the joist can fit ...

No. Exterior work requires galvanize so use Simpson 2 1/2" it does not take away from the strength of the beam. Yes. Interior work You can use a 2" or greater truss screw. This is as close as you can get.

Appropriate for lightly sloped side roof?

what you propose will work. However you should also Cut the joist end at the appropriate angle so that it fits flush against the back of the hanger. That insures that your nails through the sides of the hanger will fully contact the joist.

Can this be used with 2x8?

Asked by JakeFromStateFarm June 22, 2016

Short answer is yes ... but careful placement when attaching hanger needs some thought ... angle of rafter or joist, it's height after the ridge cuts, fastener interference, etc. I'd spend the extra few pennies for the 2X8 hanger ... and you'll still need to take into account it's height for the sheathing ... Do your research and planning before you start cutting wood and you'll save not only save time and money, but a few headaches and some frustration ...

Can you clarify what screws and or nails should be used to attach these joists. 3 1/2 inches seems too long

Asked by AXELIZ September 9, 2016

Answers

I'd use 2 ea. Simpson Strong-Tie #9 1 1/2 inch flanged screws per hanger, one on each side of hanger, one on the top, other side on the bottom, as to provide maximum horizontal 'grip' and not weaken the rafter by directly pointing at each other. More than 90% of load is vertical which the hanger itself supports. A standard 2X6 is 1 1/2 inch thick so the referenced screw is a perfect length and provides optimum grip ... Now, as for attaching the hanger itself, that depends on the structure and material you are affixing to ... I'd limit the length of fastener to the depth of what you're hanging it on, avoiding over penetration ... have fun

Could I use 10D 3in nails on these with load reductions? Any what load reduction will I see? Thanks

Yes, 10d common nails (0.148" diameter x 3" long) can be used in place of the specified 16d common nails (0.162" diameter x 3 1/2" long) with a 0.84 adjustment factor. Thank you!

Holds the 2x6 ok, but very difficult to install so that 2x6 is even with end piece. I had to use scrap piece and make pencil Mark's where bracket would go. Even then, I had to remove a couple and start over when it was misaligned.

This joist hanger is a much better choice over the conventional flavor when it is to be exposed in an 'open cover' outside deck or patio, especially when painted prior to installation ... much more pleasing to the eye ... no flange ears

Used to hang the horizontals, bottom run, on my pole building so they don't extend past the outside of the posts. I used cement board over the 2x12s to create a faux "foundation".
