Questions & Answers

Is this bracket recommended for fence posts

I plan on using this bracket with the 4X4 cedar fence post for a picket fence.
Asked by: Fencebuilder
No. This brace does not provide lateral (side to side) support. It is designed to support a 4x4 with downward forces, think hold up a deck.

Would it be okay to sandwich 2 deck joists between these for a low deck? Obviously the piers would have to be precisely set to the correct height and it may need to be shimmed on the sides. This concept would do away with the 4x4 posts all together due to the height constraint.

PB 4 in. x 4 in. ZMAX Galvanized Post Base is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes for quick work Living in the Pacific Northwest - we get a lot of rain, actually no more than many other areas of the US in terms of overall volume - we just get a little bit everyday for a long time.... We have a lot of bark dust, and ground cover in attempts to keep the soil from running, all of this keeps the moisture trapped in and around posts - using these post bases makes quick work of replacing rotting posts. Please keep in mind, these are not intended for fence posts - but I use them anyway - just not within two spans of a gate - they don't provide any lateral (side to side) strength.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from worked well for what it is designed for bought this for support on awning for a storage shed. worked well without having to sink support post deep into ground, thereby saving on cement and having to dig deeper hole and since i am 71 years young, saved engery too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it's suppose to 4X4 post bracket that gets cemented into the ground. I used this bracket for a fence post. Note that the post must be supported at the top, or this will not work. The material is steel and has a galvanized coating. Steel is relatively thick and the galvanized coating seems good. Price is very reasonable and it did what it was suppose to.

The 4x4 was reduced by rot below ground to about half it's original width and was full of termites to boot. So I set this post base in concrete and secured a new pressure treated 4x4 post to it after letting the concrete set for about 18 hours. I was a little disappointed at how flexible the resulting assembly was, much more than planting the post directly in the ground. So it remains to be seen how well it holds up in the years to come.

A perfect fit for my 4x4 support poles, and a strong hold beyond expectation. Looking forward to years of true peace of mind. Make certain to place before concrete has dried, but not so much that your unit sinks and tilts. A leveled post base makes all the difference.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from need a variety I needed the cb44 system that at one time you had. I had to buy long bolts to go through the holes on the inside of the product so it would grip the cement.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this. buy PBS 4x4 ZMAX Galvanized Standoff Post Base instead. I cemented 3 in and then decided to spend a few more $ and used the Standoff Post base for a 4' high fence. good thing I switched! But, i still used 3. There's no comparison. I now have to reinforce (the middle of 3) due to wobbly. Buyer Beware.

This is very easy to use and is one of many that I have used in the past to secure the bottom end of a 10 foot light post in the ground without having to permanently cement the post in the ground.
