Can this hold together two 7 ft 2x4 boards? I need to make one long beam to connect at top of Home made pergola.

Asked by: JohnS
I am not an expert but in my opinion the Tie Plate would not be able to support any significant weight placed upon your beam.

I tried the recommended screw: Simpson Strong-Tie #9 1-1/2 in. External Hex Flange Hex-Head Structural-Connector Screw, and it seemed too big to get through the small hole. The #6 went through but #7 and #8 required threading through the hole. Can Simpson assure me that #9 is the right size?
Asked by: Dufous
The plate allows up to 10 screws to hold each piece of the units being joined - use screws that fit through the holes - no problem.

best strap to use for underwater applications

Is Z-Max the right product for underwater use?
Asked by: Steveo
I am a structural engineer with experience in marine construction. When you say "underwater use," are you speaking specifically of something that is continually immersed in water - such as boat dock component - or do you mean something that's occasionally underwater? The fact is, that even in salt or brackish water, if you have a component that is more than a couple of feet underwater corrosion is less of an issue, as compared to something that is, say, at the tide line and is sometimes exposed and sometimes underwater. If you have something that is going to be continually underwater, say three feet deep or more, then I'd consider using this product. However, if it is going to be occasionally exposed to air, then I'd consider going with an epoxy-based coating for this or some other connector, that is rated for marine use.

Together with the screws from Simpson Strong-Tie, it's a perfect match. Very happy. The length that I need is longer than 7 in, so I put 2 plates in an overlapped connection to make it longer piece.

This tie plate looks like it will do the job for me (joining pieces of wood to prop up a decaying fence post), but I'm having trouble with the screws for it. I picked up a box of the recommended screws: Simpson Strong-Tie #9 1-1/2 in. External Hex Flange Hex-Head Structural-Connector Screw, but the thread looked too large to fit through the small holes in the plate. I reluctantly opened a box (I do not recommend but I was desperate) and tried one of the screws in the hole; it did not appear to me in this quick test that it would even pass through with the screw action. When I got the plate home, I tried #6 which went right through, but both #7 and #8 screws require the screw action to get the thread through the plate. Can you Simpson people guarantee that the #9 screws are the right ones for this plate? If so, I will go back and get the box that I opened. I don't know why you would recommend a screw that would not fit so I must be mistaken, but without some better information, I'll be getting smaller diameter screws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from USED THIS TO SPLICE JOIST RIM AND BEAMS ON MY DECK THERE IS NO STRUCTURAL RATING ON THIS PRODUCT BUT IS USED TO KEEP WOOD TOGETHER WHERE THEY MEET AT A SPLICE. EVEN THOUGH THE SPLICES OCCUR OVER A POST CAP, THIS ADDS A LITTLE EXTRA INSURANCE FOR ME PERSONALLY THAT IT WON'T EVER MOVE. RATED FOR OUTDOOR AND PRESSURE TREATED LUMBER.
