Questions & Answers

Can these be used with 2x6 rough cut lumber?

Can these be used with 2x6 rough cut lumber?
Asked by: Major
These are designed to work with nominal dimensioned lumber. 2x6 in nominal dimension would be 1 1/2” x5 1/2”. If your rough cut lumber is actually 2”x6” it would be thicker than the 1 1/2” .

Can I use these to attach 2x8 on top of crossbeam for deck?

Can I use these to attach 2x8 on top of crossbeam for deck?
Asked by: CaptainDingus
I cant see why not. With the bracket installed with the channel flush to the cross beam you could use this bracket to attach a 2x8 perpendicular to the cross beam. They may make a taller bracket suited for a 2x8.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works for floor joist too They are for rafters where you need angle for roof but I used them as floor joist hangers for 2nd floor . Nail them in joist stay where I wanted them don't have to toe nail joist in place

Have used these many times now for various projects, easier and much more secure than toe nailing, even if it does use more screws or nails. For the last project I used them to attach deck joists to beams. I have also used them to attach roof joists to the walls of a 8x8 animal shelter. They did their job as a wind storm caught the 3' front overhang on the front of the shed and flipped the shed over a fence and onto its roof. The brackets held though and the damage was minimal (and no livestock was hurt). I credit this to the fact that 3 nails went into the header and the 4th bottom nail went into the stud, reinforcing the attachment between the header and stud as well, preventing the header from tearing off the studs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Do not use the recommended #9 x 1-1/2 in. Strong-Drive SD screws, these screws stripped the wood ... Do not use the recommended #9 x 1-1/2 in. Strong-Drive SD screws, these screws stripped the wood on every point and simply free spun inside. No matter how slow or low torqued drill we used, it will eat through the pressure treated wood and free spin rendering the entire idea useless and damaging your wood. You can pull the screws out with your hands due to the stripping action, which we did and replaced them with regular 1 1/2" Galvanized nails. Also turns out that some towns only allow for nails and its clear why now. The nails anchored very nicely.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Strong We decided to use these on our outdoor pavilion.. Easy to use with straight or notched rafters...We used them for a notched overhanging rafter. Not sure they would work very well for a flush mount unless you had extra lumber at the bottom for the mounting screws.... Easily spray painted to match your color scheme..
