Size of the cast iron work surface?

Size of the cast iron work surface?
Asked by: Richard
The cast iron is about 4 inches. I set mine sideways on the table. If I have an item over 10 inches, I loosen the set screws and turn the drill 90 degress and tighten back up. I built a shelf system I used when I have taller items and need more distance than the drill allows.

10 in. Portable Drill Press with Built-In Laser is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 136.

From the first hole drilled in mild 1/8" in. steel there has been run out, or a spindle wobble. HSS or twist drill bits cannot be used in this press because the holes drilled are not round but almost triangular in shape. I had never seen this before so I talked to a retired machinist and he said it was definitely a problem in the spindle bearings. The only bits that give a relatively round hole are pilot point or brad point bits. To give an idea of the runout, to get a 1/2" hole in the 1/8" steel a 29/64"pilot point bit had to be used. To be sure, this only a $123.00 drillpress, but the whole idea of a press is to obtain better control and accuracy. This inaccuracy is unacceptable. Careful use of a hand drill could deliver better results. Before talking to the machinist, I went and bought a 1/2" machine drill bit ( whats called a stubby) that is half the length of a standard bit, thinking this might reduce wobble. It was actually worse. The press also shreds belts. CAVEAT EMPTOR! P.S. This won't make the review.

It's been very reliable and easy to use. There hasn't been any function I've needed it to perform that it hasn't. Sometimes when I'm drilling really big holes (1.5" or bigger) I have to go slow, but that's fine for me, I'm not in a production environment. I considered buying much more expensive drill presses but at the time I needed it, I didn't have the budget for anything special so I bought this one thinking I'd just sell it when I did have the money to buy something better, however, its done everything I've needed it to and I'm so happy I didn't spend $400+ on a floor standing model because it's done everything. I mainly build furniture and cabinetry for myself and loved ones and it really has been great. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is only because it doesn't have the power or depth of floor standing model but I haven't needed it... so maybe I should rate it 5 stars? It's a great tool for the price, I've been very happy.

I wanted a reasonably priced smallish drill press for my basement mini-shop, and bought this based on the ratings on-line. Overall, not too bad. A few niggles: the battery cover for the laser batteries doesn't fit after the batteries go in. (I don't use the laser anyway, so I don't know how accurate it is.) The rack on the side of the column becomes loose when the tightening crank gear (to raise or lower the table) is loosened. But once the table is tightened onto the column, the rack becomes stable These are somewhat minor issues; the overall product seems to be OK. Chinese products seem to be marginally improving quality-wise these days out of the box, but time will tell. I checked the runout of the chuck with a runout gage, and it is only about 1.5 thousandths out-of-round. Not too bad for a cheap DP. Maybe I got a decent copy. The vertical off-tilt both in the E-W and N-S directions is unmeasureable with my Starrett protractor. At the price I can't argue. The cost of a drill press, or any other competitive tool made in the USA, seems prohibitive (to me anyway)..

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Skip the Skil and get the Craftman 10" I purchased this item based on its overwhelming good reviews. The package arrived in good condition, however, after assembling the Skil it quickly became apparent how abysmal the quality was. Some of the issues included a bent table mount and the internal workings of the handle would "grind" and stick on every pull (no amount of adjusting would alleviate the issue). I ended up returning this item and headed over to Sears. The Craftsman 10" drill press is by far a superior product in build and fit/finish for approximately $15 more. The Craftsman also includes a bright LED light and a table fence. If you want a budget drill press, skip the Skil and get the Craftsman.
