Questions & Answers

How do I change the blade on this skilsaw 5587

Asked by: linden
use wrench provided, or other wrench that fits onto bolt. Naturally, do this with saw unplugged/unpowered. You need to find a way to manually hold the blade. Recommended method is jamming blade into a piece of soft scrap wood. Don't over tighten on re-install, snug should be fine.

Customer Reviews

15 Amp Corded Electric 7-1/4 in. Circular Saw with 24-Tooth Blade is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from This Saw helps DIY'ers create amazing projects! We have been in need of a circular saw for a long time. It was always our plan to ditch the MDF furniture in our home and spend our weekends building our own! The Skil brand circular saw was a major player in making those dreams come true. The first project we did with it was turn a pile of barn wood into the perfect coffee table. We took three pieces of odd shaped reclaimed barn wood and glued them together. After that, we made a jig to hold the newly made rectangle of wood so that we could cut the 4 sides down to the perfect square sized table. This saw cut through this wood with perfect precision. There were no issue. The blade was fast and did not slip or skip. This was the first time that we used a circular saw and we were able to get the job done right, the first time. The saw is ergonomic, sturdy, fast, and powerful! Please see the picture I posted of the finished coffee table. Thanks to Skil, we got it done!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Cuts, Easy to use! This saw replaced my very old and very worn out saw that I got from my mother 20 years ago. It was used when I got it. It was also very heavy and cumbersome. This saw was a delight to use. I am not a frequent power tool user, but when I need one, I need it to work the way it is supposed to work. There was no drag when cutting. The motor was steady and put in a good couple of hours work each time I have used it. I cut several 2x4s and also a few large sheets of plywood. I cut them in 1/2 and then those in 1/2 and my cuts were straight and clean each time. I used the old saw and then the new saw and the difference in weight was significant when it came to the ability to make several cuts and not experience wrist fatigue and wrist pain. I do recommend getting a good quality blade and also cleaning the saw after each usage.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No spindle lock - very awkward installing blade This model is differentiated from a slightly different Skil model by not having a lock button for holding the spindle while installing the blade. The manual advises "(5587: To lock shaft hold the saw securely by the upper guard with blade teeth imbedded in scrap wood)" while tightening the blade stud. Very awkward. Save yourself the frustration. I am returning it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Home Saw This isn't a professional saw, but it should perform just fine for any homeowner. I might upgrade to a saw that has a spindle lock for faster blade changes; however, I'll see how long this one lasts. I've been cutting 3/4" oak plywood for home projects with a plywood blade. No complaints, and the saw is handling it ok, but I'm not setting records or trying to finish the job in 3 minutes either. Overall, this should suffice for any home owner, but if your expecting to change blades often for either a big project, or serious use I'd look at an upgraded model.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great basic circular saw. Everyone should own a circular saw (maybe two!). It's a basic tool for the homeowner, hobbyist, contractor, builder, and others. This particular model Skil Model 5587 circular saw has all the basic features that you would need. See the specs for all the details. It has bevel adjustment (cutting angle), depth adjustment, wrench tool and storage, and a rough-cut blade. I cut some 2x3 for a project, and it worked well. First, I had to attach the provided blade. The saw does not come with a lock button to lock the saw shaft, so I tapped the wrench to knock the Blade Stud loose. Then I attached the blade and tightened the stud. While this saw would make a great starter saw or a second saw, because of its basic features, I would recommend that if you are looking for a heavy-duty saw, or commercial-grade saw, or if you are planning to do lots of major projects, then step up to one of the near top-of-the-line Skil circular saws; it will cost a lot more but will be worth it in the long run for all the added features you get. Whatever you decide, be sure to pickup some extra blades and add a variety (fine-cut, concrete, metal). I also prefer to put my tools in cases. This does not come with a case, and it is hard to find cases for circular saws unless you specifically buy a saw with an included case. I will be purchasing a large tool bag and using that. It will carry my blades and other accessories. This saw is made by Skil - it is well-made and will last a very long time. I look forward to handing this down to my son one day, when he has a place of his own.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Saw! For a first timer, this is a great saw. It has a nice worm drive style handle with a soft grip for a comfortable feel and good control when doing a project. The saw depth is average , however I did not see a locking bottom for the blade. The saw has good solid weight and size and seems very durable .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent saw for the job The drill was recommended by the sales person at the Home Depot. When I got it home, I needed to change the blade. There was some confusion on my part on how to do that at first. Once I figured out how to change the blade, the process was easy. The saw was easy to use. I is light and made the job easy to complete.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Saw Cuts! The included carbide blade is sharp and cuts through anything. I've had a couple saws before where the blade needed to be switched out right away because of its poor quality and lack of durability, but there is no problem with this saw's blade. But the saw's foot has a special place for the wrench in case of a change-out. The handle has a nice grip and is very easy to use. I really like how wide the foot is; gives me more stability and accuracy when cutting! The cord length is about 7 feet, long enough for me to do the job. It weighs almost 10 pounds, the perfect weight for me to hold and push along the wood. There is plenty of power in this bad boy, giving me confidence that each cut will go through without a hitch. For the price and quality, I definitely recommend this product for the every-day projects. It has the strength and power to cut through your work in no time, every time.
