This model fits in most new car remote housing compartments or can be easily carried or clipped on to sun visors. After connecting this new receiver to your wall button, your existing remote control will still work. PLEASE NOTE, if the Smart Button red LED does not flash after the Smart Button has been connected to the wall button’s wires for 2 minutes, your garage door opener is probably too old. Questions & Answers

Do I have to replace the existing wall button?

I want to keep my existing wall button. There is no visible wire to the existing wall button. By putting this unit next to my existing button without clipping it to any wire, would both this button and the existing button work?
Asked by: DarthKristie
No. You have to connect the adapter to the wall button directly, or to the wires of the wall button in back of the wall. This is not a "remote" adapter unit.

Sears craftsman opener?

This garage door opener dates back to the 1980s. There is an internal button, and an external keypad/receiver. If I understand correctly, this one smart button unit replaces both of those devices. We aren't concerned with having keypad entry at all, we just want remote entry. I assume that I would be attaching it to the wires leading to the internal button. I'm just wondering if the signal will carry through the door and the garage, as the button is near the back of the garage.
Asked by: feckless
Move the adapter unit closer to the garage-door opener itself, but on the same circuit sequence. This will give a few more feet closer transmission distance, but, only if the opener itself is closer to the garage-door, which in turn is closer to the remote in your car.

Universal Remote Control Kit is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works but not reliable It connected easily and does work. But I think the signal along the wire isn't as strong and the door does not open all the way most of the time. It is rare that the door opens on the first try. Maybe my wiring is just really old. It's more affordable than replacing everything so I put up with it.

I could not determine if the problem was in the remote transmitter or the receiver. I changed a good battery and it did not resolve the failure. So I ordered another kit and was able to determine that the receiver was the problem. Now I need to send the failed receiver back as it is still under the 1 year warrantee.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unit was as easy to install as it says. ... Unit was as easy to install as it says. Just snap the shell over the existing door button wiring and mate the remote to the device. My only gripe is that sometimes it can be unresponsive, you may have to push the button 2-3 times. But after not being able to open my door for a long time, this is an excellent mid $20 resolution, rather than a couple hundred dollars to replace the opener. Well worth it!

First I broke the clamp trying to crimp it closed. Then I may have burnt it out by connecting it directly. That being said, it's a great idea and should work for those who know what they're doing. Give it a try...
