Yes, as long as you have hot water circulating trough it, it will work regardless of how you heat your water. The water temperature is what’s going to make a difference of how fast it warms up the area.

They include a template in the package to tell you where to drill your holes. The heat pipes are 3/4 inch so a 1 inch hole should be plenty big enough.

Is it safe to use in a potable water system? Thinking of a passive preheater for a tankless water heater.

Thanks for the info on tube thickness. And you're absolutely correct about heat recovery from wastewater - I'm planning on doing both, actually, and hope to get some passive cooling from the water supply before further heating it with a greywater heat exchanger.

what size shark bite adapters do i purchase for this ? Thanks

Asked by monique June 25, 2020

Answer

I would strongly recommend against using Shark Bite brand or other brands of mechanical connectors on hyrdonic heating systems for a number of reasons. First the wall thickness of the copper tube used in fin tube is not that of M or L tubing. Second, because of this those fittings can allow air to enter the closed loop system even if they do not leak. This air will destroy the heating system from the inside as heating systems are meant to be oxygen free environments. And lastly hyrdronic heating systems can operate at temperatures that exceed the temperature limits of those fittings. I would never connect to baseboard element with anything other than a soldered connection. Even when using PEX supply lines I will solder the PEX adapter to the end of the element. Lastly while we are on the subject of PEX, you must use heat PEX not water PEX. Oxygen will defuse through the wall of water PEX and destroy the system. Some people claim this is a myth because it takes a few years. As a plumber who has consulted on jobs where this was done, I can assure you it is no myth.

The heating element is made of very thin metal. I needed to shorten it a bit and the copper pipe was so thin that it warped and twisted when using my pipe cutter on it.
