Questions & Answers

can this unit be vented into an unlined chimney

can this unit be vented into an unlined chimney
Asked by: cooper
No it can not. This boiler is not intended nor has it been designed to use a chimney; lined or unlined. This product is designed to be direct vented. Keep in mind. A chimney is not and exhaust pipe. A chimney is an air column designed to create draft. When the appliance operates a certain amount of heat is left in the flue gas. This is done on purpose. That heat causes the exhaust gases to rise up the chimney. This creates a vacuum that pulls additional combustion air into the appliance. This is called "Natural Draft". Incidentally this is one of the reasons why we line chimneys. We line them to make them smaller so that it takes less time for them to heat up and create positive draft. This is needed due to the increases in efficiency that have been mandated over the years. For the most part the department of energy requires a minimum efficiency of 80% Meaning 20 % of the heat is left in the flue gas. At roughly 85% efficiency you no longer have enough heat left in the exhaust to use a chimney. And when you get into the 90 plus percent heat extraction the exhaust contains condensed water that is a bi-product of the burnt fuel. My 98% efficient boiler actually produces 5 gallons of very acidic water a day when running. The venting requirements of each appliance are specific to that appliance. So consult the venting requirements as specified the that specific appliances installation instructions before doing anything. If you have further question please feel free to give me a call. Can this boiler be changed to run on propane?

Can this boiler be changed to run on propane?
Asked by: Dave
Yes. in fact the Home Depot offers it on there web site as SKU 2027873252 If put that in the search block it will come up. Also if you would like it to come from the factory set for LP rather than converting it in the field it can be ordered that way from any store. If you have questions you are welcome to give me a call. Chris 978 651 3301

Is this boiler for use with hot water radiators. My home was built in the 1950's and I have radiators.
Asked by: Throwback
This boiler, as is the case with the majority of cast iron water boilers, is designed to produce 180 F water. That water is then used in the heat distribution system. You have indicated that your distribution system is cast iron water radiators. Which is a fine application for this boiler. Just make sure it is a water system as sometimes cast iron radiators are use with steam, which requires a different style of boiler. This boiler would also work with a distribution system that utilized copper baseboard as well. If you have further questions you are welcome to give me a call.Chris 978 651 3301
