Customer Reviews

Smarter Tools 6,500/7,500-Watt Dual Fuel Generator with Electric Start and Battery is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 82.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Bang for the Buck! This review is valid as of 1/9/2014. The reason that I mention that is from the past reviews. For one, the battery is listed as optional, but it did come with the battery. Several mentioned getting a trickle charger, but it came with a short cable that connects to the battery and plugs into the 12V charging outlet. It comes without oil in the engine (pretty much standard), but it comes with a quart of oil. The wheel kit is VERY easy to install, and from then on, easy to move around. Intended to run mostly on propane . . . easy start, quiet running. Would never run on gasoline except in an absolute emergency. Paid $749.00 from Home Depot on sale, best bang for the buck! Engine is Chinese made by Winling Jennfeng Industry Inc. Raised a few eyebrows, but impressed with the engine. Excellent manual and parts list . . . can find any part of the generator or the engine when the need arises. Would I recommend this generator . . . you bet! Buy it if you can get it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality, Good price Picked up at store and two guys lifted it into my truck. Was able to unpack and get set up in about 15-20 minutes. A bottle of oil was included with just the right amount to fill the engine - was able to fill crankcase without spilling a drop. I also topped off the battery with a charger, BEFORE connecting the battery terminals (per instructions). After connecting to the LP tank, the unit started cold WITHOUT choking (per LP starting instructions). I connected to the Generac Transfer Switch with a 30 amp cord having L14-30 plugs and flipped on circuits to the refrigerator, freezer and furnace. Everything worked flawlessly. Even if this unit is never used in the next 10 years, it is worth the peace of mind knowing I can keep warm, keep food from spoiling and even cook it in the microwave if we do have an extended outage. The LP option also avoids the problem of keeping a supply of fresh gasoline on-hand. In our last major outage, I had to drive 5 miles to find a station that had power and it was a 30 minute wait to get to the pumps.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Assembly problematic This seems to be a good unit at a very fair product, which I only intend to use for hurricane power outages. It replaces a unit that does not have electric start, and I am getting too old to pull the starter. Also the gasoline or LP gas option is huge, it relieves the problem of the safety of gas storage and old fuel. I never intend to use gasoline unless I have to. But the assembly has a screaming problem. Putting the wheels and handles on is easy. But hooking up the LP gas line is almost impossible for the normal homeowner. There is absolutely no way to get a wrench on the hose to tighten due to the location under the gasoline tank. I read one review of a fellow that went out and bought a tubing wrench to do it, which he said worked. I was able to get it "tight enough" by using a basin wrench, that plumber's tool used to work on faucet nuts while you are upside down between the sink and the wall, changing a faucet. This is the type of thing that makes me hate design engineers. They should have to work on the stuff they design. It is evident that the guy that designed this never tried to hook up the hose!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nice generator with dual fuel capabilities After quite a bit of shopping around, I zeroed in on this portable generator to save me from future (and likely) power outages. Power outages seem to be a way of life here in NH; sometimes for hours, and other times days. Finally decided enough was enough. This generator is a good match for my power needs to run most things in the house (except the AC and hot tub) through a 30A generator outdoor receptical to feed the entire electrical panel through breaker/interlock at the panel. Tried it out with various loads in combination including the microwave, fridge, chest freezer, water pump, and numerous lights. It managed to meet the power demand just fine. Ran on both propane and gasoline to do a full checkout. Easy to start and seemed to run very smoothly on either fuel. Plan to eventually extend a propane line from the tank feeding the house to enable me to attach to the big supply instead of the 20 lb bottles. Easy to assemble including attachment of the propane hose. Much nicer than another gas/propane unit that I bought earlier from HD and returned. The personnel at Smarter Tools were also helpful prior to my purchase in answering questions as I shopped various models.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from everything I expected and more I did extensive study before buying this generator and so far it meets all my expectations. I have not had the opportunity to use it in an emergency but I have tried it out by shutting off utility power. It handled all of my home's needs without any complications -- this includes simultaneous running of two propane furnaces, two refrigerators, an in-ground well water pump and a 50" plasma tv. I had my electrician run a separate line to power a trouble light near my service box so when I crank up the generator, I have immediate light where I need to make the switch from utility to generator service. I am a very happy camper at home.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great generator! Was very easy to setup, took about 10 min to attach wheels and handle. Started right up using propane. Haven't used it with gas yet because I don't want it to set with gasoline in the carb. I bought this for instances when we loose power in the house. It is capable of powering my fridge, deep freezer, and portable heater all at the same time with some power to spare. I love the fact that it is dual fuel. Propane burns so much cleaner and if I run out then switch over to gasoline. I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars because I wish it had some sort of throttling function so that it would throttle down as the load decreases which would increase the run time. Noise level isn't that bad either for a generator of this size. It comes with everything you need to get started except power cord and fuel. Even comes with a 110v power cord to charge the supplied battery. It is heavy though, around 200 pounds. So keep that in mind when you go to pick it up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from never ran for more than 4 hrs before it quit I was all excited when I got this generator, it had all the features that I wanted all the parts were there and went together with no problems(I don't understand why some reviewers had trouble hooking up the gas line, mine wasn't any trouble at all) I only ran the generator on propane and the first time I ran it with no load it ran for about 4 hrs and started to run real rough so I shut it down. The next day I ran it with about 1000 watt load and it ran for about 2 hrs and started to cough and spit run rough so I shut it down, it acted to me like the choke was on. I tried it a few more times adding a light load on and off and most of the time it would work fine but sooner or later it would start sputtering and spitting and slow way down and would eventually quite. I got tired of messing with and took it back to the store and ordered another one just like it , hope the new one works

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Propane option is great This unit has lots of features, the propane option eliminates the possible carburetor gasoline issues. My only complaint so far, is that when attaching the propane hose to the unit, the fitting is somewhat difficult to reach and tighten. I had to go out and purchase a 3/4" "birds foot" wrench that fits on a 3/8" drive extension to properly tighten the fitting.
