Do you have to use wood chips or can you put wood chunks in the wood trays that will last longer.
Asked by: JimVR
You could use chunks but the wood tray covers probably will have to be left off. So the chips might smoke a bit faster.

Is the box double walled insulated?
Asked by: Haines
Single wall, not insulated, doesn't need insulation IMO. With only one burner on the lowest setting, it gets up to 275F, so you have to open the vents to lower the temperature anyway, so why insulate it? Hope that helps.

Can this sit on a trex deck when in use?
Asked by: Tiny
That's where mine is. There is a grease drip pan, so it may need to be emptied so as to not drip. But those legs hold it very high and there's no discernible heating of the trex deck below it. If it's of concern, they do sell grill mats you can put under it, but I don't see any need.

Can you put wheels on legs

Asked by: Ckx
You'd have to drill out a mounting hole in each leg. The bottom of each leg consists of a triangle of spot welded steel. I think it would work but it might be fragile. What I did was use 2x4 lumber to build a square frame on which the legs sit, and a similar frame around it to hold the legs in place, and then a screw and fender washer to hold the legs down on the wood base. And I attached 3" casters to the base so it's easy to move.

Customer Reviews

44 in. Gas Smoker with Window is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is Not a risky purchase ! The smoker arrived - double boxed with two layers of Styrofoam, tightly and carefully packed, all pieces were individually wrapped. The smoker hardware came counted, sorted, labeled and vacuum packed on a single card. While researching this smoker I had occasion to call their customer service, the calls (two) were to verify the BTU output and to check for future part availability. The calls were answered in person (no machine) they were pleasant and informative. I started the smoker to test and "season" it . The outside temp was 38F gusty winds. The smoker with both burners on high quickly rose to 370F and climbing when I cut it back. The cabinet thermometer was accurate, checked against a maverick 733 digital thermometer. The smoker thermometer is in the top of the cabinet, there is temp difference between the top and bottom. I cooked a 18lb pork butt no problem maintaining 225F the cook took 8hrs. Clean up took 1/2 hr. I wrote this to dispute some negative reviews. This machine rocks!

I did make a few changes to the smoker though and that's why it didn't rate 5 stars I added 2" casters to the 4 legs to make moving it around a little easier. I caulked the door glass as it leaked a lot of smoke around the hinge side. I caulked the bottom door as it also leaked pretty bad. I also caulked the top vent as it rained and a lot of water went into the smoker. I have smoked brisket, pork and chicken and all came out great. I smoked 3 different times and used about 1/2 tank of propane total. Note that you have to adjust the burner between light and high to get the smoker down to a constant 225 degrees. But, once set there, it stayed for hours.

I really wanted to comment on the lousy packing job that they do to fit this monster into a manageable size box. Mine arrived with a lot of bent and dented parts. Also a broken shelf support for the water pan. Anywhere anything is welded it s just spot welded with poor penetration. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, It seems solid and it should work fine. I can see gaps in a lot of places, so we'll see how well it holds a consistent temp. I had to call the 1-866 number supplied with the instructions to request a replacement part, the lady on the phone said a new one is on its way without too much hassle. We'll see. I'll update after I use it, and after the replacement part arrives.

Went together easily. Comes with every type of accessory - special racks included for ribs, hooks for hanging sausages, heavy racks for smoking meat, turkey, etc. and fine grid lightweight racks for making jerky. I've only done brisket and it was great. Some prior comments mentioned that the door doesn't seal. The tension for the levers (2) that close the glass door is adjustable (easily) and that draws it pretty tight. But it need not be airtight because there are vents on both sides anyway to adjust temperature and flow. It's not insulated, but doesn't need that either. With only one of the 2 burners running on the lowest setting, the box gets up to 275, so to get it lower (225 for brisket), I just had to open the air dampers a little. Again, since that's necessary, there's no need for a tight seal. It smokes nicely, decent sized pan for water, 2 pans for wood chips, and a separate door for accessing those items even while the burners are going, so you can replenish wood and water without opening the cooking/smoking chamber. And it is quite large. Seems well made. I plan to store it indoors so it won't rust, get varmints in it, etc. I put it on a wooden frame with large casters so it's easier to move. Not terribly heavy but well made. I'm impressed so far!

The Smoke Hollow was easy to put together, and all the screw holes lined up properly. Prior to seasoning it, I followed advice from some BBQ websites and sealed around the doors with Nomex self stick gasket. This worked extremely well. However the smoke poured out from around the glass window. After it cooled and I cleaned around the inside of the window frame, I used a high temp RTV silicone sealant. When smoking the next time, much less escaped, though my seal wasn't thick enough in some places. This past weekend, I smoked a 15 pound packer brisket, and I have to say once I got the hang of temperature regulation, it was very steady. Used one burner on low-medium and was able to keep it at 225-250. Used chunks of pecan in the wood trays but covered with punctured foil instead of the lids that came with the smoker. They stopped with the white smoke pretty quickly and then slowly burned down properly. One tray full lasted about 6 hours. The brisket was excellent by all accounts from those who ate it. I also made a low wooden cart on locking casters to sit the smoker on, and it rolls so easily on the deck. Makes it easy to store next to the house when not in use.

This is also a very low cost unit. It arrived damaged and had some broken parts. It did function and is very easy to use. The large burners are enough to get this unit very hot. You could easily use this to bake a cake at 350 degrees. This is not a bad unit for the price. I will definitely go to the store for a future purchase of something like this. I would have preferred a more durable unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Purchase Ever! I have been eyeing this smoker for a long time now. I finally made the purchase and I couldn't be happier. It was a cinch to assemble, it is very sturdy, I love the different smoking racks for the different meats, and the size is perfect. I LOVE this smoker! I would highly recommend this smoker to anyone looking for a GREAT propane smoker.
