Product Overview

Clear to the MAX! Responding to the need for an easy-to-use machine that could tackle heavier snowfall on driveways and walkways, Snow Joe® developed the Snow Joe® Max SJM988, a larger electric snow thrower that delivers the power of a gas machine with the convenience of an electric unit. Driven by a 13.5-amp motor, the Snow Joe® Max moves up to 650 pounds of snow per minute. Its durable, 4-blade rotor, constructed of heavy-grade steel, cuts 18 inches wide by 10 inches deep with each pass, clearing up to 2450 square feet per hour! In addition to its hard-working plowing capacity, the Snow Joe® Max features an adjustable discharge chute that rotates a complete 180 degrees to provide full control over the snow stream direction. The chute deflector can also be adjusted to control the height of the snow stream. Easy-glide pivot wheels make the Snow Joe® Max easy to turn and maneuver on each pass. An on-board 20 W halogen headlight provides increased visibility for nighttime clearing. And, its scraper blade at the base of the unit efficiently scrapes the snow clear to the ground without damaging your deck or pavement. Powered electrically, the Snow Joe® Max SJM988 starts instantly with the push of a button and is completely maintenance free. No gas, oil, or tune-ups are necessary. There are 2 wheels at the back of the unit. Pushing it is pretty smooth.

Can I use this snowblower on my composite board deck?

Yes you can so long as the deck isn't "splintering" with raised protrusions of the composite material.

Can this be used on a nonpaved surface? Part of my driveway is gravel.

I do use this on my gravel walkways. You just need to be careful not to dig into ground, otherwise gravel goes flying through the shoot. I live in the northeast and this has been a blessing for me. I also use it to make a path to my car door and to clear out the snow from in front of my car, which I park on grass when storms come. I do this so my driveway can be plowed out without my vehicle being on the way.

Just got it, only have had 1 snow to test it in. I'm in Colorado, having an eppic snow now. One of the very reasons I bought the snow joe is its steel blades that are rubber encased and replaceable, even the bottom "edge" is replaceable. The Toro curve I had before didn't have replacement part that I found. Check the website for more information.

Great Little Snow Blower
Customer review from snowjoe.com logo
I only used this Snow Joe once this year, but it was the March 13, 2019 blizzard that blasted Denver. We got almost 10 inches of heavy wet snow, and the Snow Joe got through it. It took some effort, but it managed. As soon as the snow stopped, I was out there with the Snow Joe. If I waited until the next day when the snow was more packed down, it would have been a lot harder to use the snow blower, but that would be the case with most snow blowers.

I love this machine. It goes through the snow like a hot knife through butter. Only disadvantage was trying not to run over the cord.

Perfect for my needs, What you get compared to what you pay, I could not be happier. I live in Star Idaho and this year we have had the most snow in the last thirty years. I use this to clear our three car driveway and sidewalks, and reduces time spent shoveling by eighty percent.

Does well with a dry snow
Not as strong as a gas blower but it will get the job done.. Well worth the price . It will clog with slush. but does well with dry snow.

(What's this)
This is a small, light, easy to move and manuever snowblower. Since it is electric it is both light and fairly quiet. However, the requirement for a cord restricts movement and range. If you are going to do a large driveway or long sidewalk, you are going to need a long extension cord. The cord did tend to get in the way while using it. I felt like I was constantly fighting with it. I have used it in about two to three inches of snow. It was able to chew through, even as the snow started to plow up in front of it. The chute worked well and was easy to turn to direct the snow to the left or right. The start switch is tricky to use - and probably for a good cause. There is a specifc sequence that almost requires two hands, but should prevent it from being accidentally started as it is electric and always ready to run while plugged in. The two-step start switch does a good job of preventing an accidental start up - particularly by a little person who might want to help you out while clearing the driveway! The thing to remember with this snowblower is application and use. If you live in northern New York, this is NOT the snowblower for you. If you live someplace where annual snowfall is measured in inches and not feet, this may be a good fit. If you have a long driveway, you're going to need a long cord...or several. It is light and easy to manuever, but it is NOT for heavy duty snow removal... ...and that cord will always be in the way.

(What's this)
This Snow Joe snow blower is a great corded blower for the house where the size of the driveway can be reached with an extension cord. It clears an 18 in wide path with ease.It has a light for the night blowing. Using a power blower is a good back saver with all the snow we get in the northeast. The assembly is very easy. Just straighten up the handle and tighten the knobs.

(What's this)
I will start by saying I haven't had much of a chance to try this in heavy snow yet, but I think I've gotten a pretty good feel for how it handles for the task I've designated it for. This is being used as a gift to my mother so that she doesn't have to shovel her walk or deck, her driveway gets plowed but they leave behind a strip into the garage and her walkway (and I live too far to be a good enough son to come shovel it myself). This blower works great for this purpose. It's very straightforward to operate and most importantly it does not leave behind a thick 'film' of unblown snow over uneven cobblestone (check the picture). The swivel for the port to expel the snow is a bit tough to turn, I may need to add some lubricant, and the plastic tires are not the highest quality, yet it was light enough that even if the tires weren't engaged it just slid with little effort. The need for a cord was less of a hassle than I expected (an extension cord is not included), as it just stayed behind me as I plowed the walk, and it worked well enough on the light snow to not need to retrace my steps. I would not suggest this for large driveways, but for a walkway/sidewalk or couple car driveway at this price I would highly recommend it over hurting your back shoveling.

(What's this)
After anxiously waiting for weeks to use my new Snow Joe electric snow thrower, we received a light snow fall. The Snow Joe MAX snow thrower is an excellent machine for the right situations, provided your expectations are realistic and you know its limitations. For me, electric snow throwers like this one from Snow Joe serve as a reliable backup or alternative to a gas snow blower that is expensive to operate and requires annual maintenance. The power of this snow blower is comparable to that of a small SINGLE STAGE gas thrower, and is arguably far superior to shoveling by hand. However, this snow thrower will not replace your 12 hp 2-stage snow blower. The thrower comes mostly assembled, only requiring attachment of the crank handle for the chute. An extension cord is the only accessory you’ll need to purchase. At 18-inches wide, with a throw of up to 20-feet this snow thrower from Snow Joe is perfect for clearing snow from paths, walkways, deck and patio areas and small-to-medium driveways. A large, front fixed-mount 20 watt halogen lamp illuminates your way, but also provides safety by allowing snow plows to see you in the dark. The 13.5 amp electric motor is capable of handling snow up to 10-inches deep. The thick, dense, foam padded handle is comfortable and keeps hands warmer than grasping onto a bare metal handle. At about 40 lbs, this snow blower is lightweight and rolls on small plastic wheels that make it easy to maneuver on hard surfaces, but with no self-propelled wheels or gearing, it’s important to have footwear with good traction. The 180-degree adjustable chute allows you to control the angle and direction of the discharge, which your next door neighbors and passers-by will appreciate. The handle folds away for easy storage. Like most single-stage machines, this snow thrower is not ideal for heavy, wet snow and slush or solid ice, but will quickly move powder and packed snow leaving a clear path down to bare pavement. In comparison, this snow blower handles wet snow better than my 2-stage machine that suffers from occasional clogging due to slush build up in the area of the impeller and chute. Since you are tethered by a cord, it’s important to plan your path to avoid tripping on the cord or catching it in the blades. To operate the snow blower, depress the small quarter-size safety button on the side of the handle and then pull the trigger lever. Once started, you can take your finger off the safety button, but releasing the trigger lever immediately shuts the motor off. Unlike my 2-stage gas snow blower, this Snow Joe is safe for wood and composite decks and is light enough for a single person to carry up and down a flight of stairs. I especially like that I can store it in my garage or shed suspended from the rafters by a couple of hooks where it doesn’t take up valuable floor space.
