Questions & Answers

Could it damage the roof while removing snow?

Asked by: Mohi
Perhaps it could if you banged the rake against the shingles. I just lift the rake as far up the roof as I can and drop it down and then pull the rake towards me. Also, I don't scrape all the way down to the shingles.

Can you just buy the handle
Asked by: Fern
, fern, you may be able to rig, another ext. handle up, but I don't think so, and remember when , you start tyo extend it, it will become more unstable, , also, if you have asphalt roof shingles, you want to , use rags and ducttape, or foam, and duct tape, on shovel part, so as not to scrape shingles , no matter what, , we always wrap top of anything , and cushion, it, if its gonna touch the roof, I have a doublewide home, and this reaches, almost all off it except for few feet of gable, and where home gets higher up, due to ground slope, very useful tool, , especially, how manu. roofs are const., not want any extra weight on, if can help it,

Why dont store managers have this product in store when it snows, not ordering it and by the time it arrives the snow has

Asked by: Bill
Playing Devil's Advocate here; in my experiences working for a competitor of Home Depot's as a Department Manager: The kind of snow we have received this year has been fairly extreme and more than average. I'm sure the store Management Team's at these stores have been adamant in trying to continue to stock this item, however, I'm also certain they have been flying off the shelves as fast as they can as well, given the amount of calling around I personally have done to find one for myself as well. It's very difficult to accurately judge and predict sales patterns, especially with the milder winters experienced in years past. Also, not all of these items are directly stocked at the store distribution centers, and may in-fact, actually come directly from the manufacturer's warehouses, who are likely experiencing the same strain in stock replenishment, since they service more than just Home Depot, and demand is very high for this item at the current juncture. Additionally, this is something I have never previously needed since I've owned my house; because, the snow usually melts off the roof faster than becoming a problem, unlike this year, so now it has become a necessary purchase. I've ordered one online, for store delivery, since that way I can be certain one comes into my store, with my name on it, rather than checking more stores.

I am unable to give a review based on the functionality of this product as it was specifically designed, because I purchased it for the telescopic handle. The reason for the 'average' rating is because I got it through the on-line site for an In-Store pickup, and didn't realize the pole was bent about 30° at the rake end until after I got home. NOTE: For those of you who duck & goose hunt, this makes an excellent water retrieval tool when installing a fishing net to the end of it. I simply pulled the end cap off my net, measured for the two retainer buttons, drilled two holes in the handle- and I have an easy break down duck retrieval tool when jump shooting on rivers, etc. See attached photo- this was after applying first coat of paint. (ducks don't typically fly toward shiny objects!)

I use it to clean the snow off my solar panels which are free standing in my back yard. I have used it a number of times over the last few weeks, this past weekend we got 24-30 inches of snow. The blade is angled which is ok when you are using it over your head and looking along the roof line, but if you are using it from an angle above that the angle on the roof rake is too much and you cannot get the edge of the blade to contact the surface. said another way, the handle has to be within a few inches of the roof or the solar panels for the shovel edge to contact the surface. I would like the angle of the head to be less. But for the price I am happy with the product.

Overall, the rake works good, but the reason I am giving it 3 stars is this. When you tighten the parts where it extends, the extensions will come out if you hit something on the roof. I keep forgetting to rake it early on in the season, and then my gutters get a lot of ice built up in them. So when I rake the roof, the shovel part will hit the ice, and the furthest extension rod will detach. I tighten it up as much as possible, but it still happens (I workout 6 times a week, so trust me when I say it's tight). They need to come up with a better locking system for the extension parts.

The section connected to the rake kept coming apart from the second section at the first twist connector. I finally had to epoxy the twist connector to the second section. Once I did that it worked but it's hard work to pull down snow that is over a few inches thick. It took me all of an afternoon to pull down the top few inches from one half of one side of the roof. I'm going to try one of those snow cutters with the snow slide on the rest of it.

With actual use of the rake with wet snow. the connection points came apart and snow frequently got stuck in the center causing more time to rake the roof. The Pro of a light weight aluminum body became a negative when fully extended because it has already warped after the one use. . I would NOT recommend this. I have already considered throwing it away...

It is light weight and easy to use. I am short and not strong, but I have no problems with this product. It has made a big difference in my power output this winter. Also, Snow Joe has outstanding customer service!

Does the job - Easy to assemble, like the fact there brackets screw directly into the blade. Came with allen wrench and small wrench didn't need to dig tools out of my tool box. The telescoping handle worked great. This replaced an older roof rake that need to have segments snapped together to extend. Blade worked great on my metal seem roof.

To sum it up, I received it yesterday and took it out of the box, put it together and my 3rd swipe on the roof one of the poles pulls out of the twist lock. Don't know if I can fix it because I don't know how they install the twist locks on them. That being said I shouldn't have to fix it already. Less then 30 seconds of use and it broke.
