Orange Rocket Barberry is an award-winning barberry that sports a unique color combination. Each spring new foliage starts out a vibrant coral-orange that fades to purple and then green in the summer. Once fall comes around, the deciduous leaves of this barberry turn a vibrant ruby red. Lastly, this barberry does have small spiny branches protruding from each leaf cluster that look like thorns. These little spines produce crimson red berries in the fall, which birds enjoy. Orange Rocket is known for its columnar habit, growing 2-3 feet wide by 4-5 feet tall. Making it perfect as a compact vertical element in mixed gardens or in containers. Or plant it as a specimen among other plants, and watch this Orange Rocket's foliage dazzle in your landscape.
  • Coral-orange new growth that turns green in the summer and ruby red in the fall
  • Berry producing barbs protrude from each leaf cluster and bear crimson colored fruit each fall
  • Vertical habit, 2-3 ft. wide by 4-5 ft. tall
  • Adapts to many soil types
  • Ships dormant in winter
  • An attractive shrub for color interest
  • Fertilize in spring with slow-release granular fertilizer
  • Very low maintenance once plant is established
  • Full sun-part shade

Do humming birds like this plant or do you sell any plants they do like?

Asked by Barry July 25, 2020
2
Answers

Absolutely not...its a thorny deciduous shrub which produces nearly non-existent micro flowers. Hummingbirds need large flowers to feed. They like trumpet vine flowers, rose of sharon and countless others flowering trees, shrubs and vines. Colorful vegetation is of no use to hummingbirds.

Does the berries attract ants

Asked by Jeanette July 22, 2020
1
Answer

I suppose berries of the Barberry could attract ants if one has ants in the area where this plant is planted. They are not going to "bring all the (ants) to the yard", if that is what you're concerned about. ;)

Can they stand the Phoenix summer

Asked by Willuam June 9, 2020
1
Answer

Phoenix's planting zones are 9b-10a. The Orange Rocket Barberry's top survival planting zone range is 9b. I would say try one out first and see how it does, before investing too much.

The plant looked okay when I received it. However, it is not growing afterwards and seems dying. I transferred it to a bigger planter pot with addition of new soils and water it twice a week. All the leaves are drying somehow. I got a different plant from the same vendor. I did the same thing, and the other plant is growing fine.

It arrived with most of it's leaves missing. It was also very dry and shriveled up. I planted it anyways and I'm hoping that it will come back to life.

Purchased ~$300 worth of plants from Home Depot, including this one which was over $30.00 It is the only one out of the 16 or so that have been planted that died -- it died almost immediately. For $30+ it is definitely a disappointment.

Very pretty!
I ordered 2 2.5 quart sized barberry shrubs. They really are a beautiful color. They came very healthy looking.

Beautiful small accent shrub
This is a gorgeous small accent shrub that stays small, and will take some shade. It was perfect in my area that had a lot of green, with a red Japanese maple in the back to play off of. It's the perfect splash of color in this area. It only gets abt 2ft x2ft, so don't expect it to get big. It works best as an accent shrub for its foliage, especially in a border. It needs sun, but will take some shade especially in the afternoon. It will lose its leaves in the winter and come back in spring.

Arrived in great shape!
I was reluctant to by this orange rocket by mail but decided to take a chance. I’m so glad I did. It arrived well-packaged in a cardboard box. Can’t wait to plant it.
