Product Overview

The Florida Sunshine Anise shrub from the Southern Living Plant Collection is here to bring new life to your shady gardens. This selection features brilliant chartreuse green foliage with a light fragrance. In Fall, the leaves take on a hot yellow color which truly glows in the winter landscape. It's always tricky finding colorful plants for shaded gardens and the Florida Sunshine Anise solves this problem beautifully, as it grows well from Partial Shade to Full Shade. Furthermore, this is a notably heat-tolerant plant with naturally compact growth. It reaches 5 ft. to 7 ft. tall and 3 ft. W at maturity, however, it also responds well to pruning in early spring. Late spring sees the production of non-edible fruit with the characteristic Anise smell. This Illicium is hardy from USDA Zones 7 to 9 and grows well in average quality garden soil with good drainage. Water your new plantings 2 times to 3 times per week for the first growing season and fertilize with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in Spring. These Florida Sunshine Anise are well-rooted in a 2 Gal. pot and will tend to range from 12 in. to 18 in. tall when shipped.

Questions & Answers

3Questions3Answers

Would this plant tolerate pruning to keep it at 3 ft. tall?

Asked by RB August 4, 2020
1
Answer

Yes you should be able to prune the Florida Sunshine Anise Shrub to keep it at that height. It is a slow growing tree that only reaches a mature height of 5 foot. Please remember that NO part of this tree is edible, including the fruit.

Is the fruit poisonous to pets?

Asked by SEV May 15, 2020
1
Answer

The Illicium that we carry do not produce fruit. If you're thinking of the Star Anise fruit that is specific to Illicium verum, which is a different species from our Illicium parviflorum.

How does this plant do in Zone 10, full sun?

Asked by gardener April 22, 2020
1
Answer

This plant won't survive in Zone 10 with full sun since it only requires part sun and it grows best in zone 7-9.

The plant arrived with brown leaves all over it. It looks like it either has a disease of some type or is being attacked by some type of bug. The tree is in terrible shape- I’m not sure what to do with it honestly. Very disappointed.

This is a gorgeous shrub and adds beautiful color to our landscape. It was lost in shipping and arrived wilted and with brown spots on the leaves. We got it in the ground right away and it has recovered well.
