Needs more horse power, leaks oil from cap, and you have to choke it constantly to get it started. It does alright though, if you edge regularly.

When I took out the pieces to assembly the edger one of the bolt's threads was crooked so it wouldn't screw. When i called the company to ship me an extra part, i was met with a rude customer service woman who made me jump through hoops to prove i purchased this product, including sending a receipt AND reading her the manufacturing #. As the machine sits unassembled and useless in my garage as I wait for the part, Southland should have been nothing but apologetic instead of treating a customer like criminal trying to scam the system to send them a replacement bold. I would have bought a different brand, i can understand that these things happen but this bad service is unacceptable.

Actually 4.5 stars. Have owned the product about a month, and used about six times. Meets my expectations. Product assembled easily and started right up. It has made edging 300+ feet of sidewalk a breeze! I actually look forward to doing it. Edging beds is more difficult, as the nose wheel mount tends to dig into the grass while pushing it with the blade more than two notches down. I have discovered that pulling it works better but it takes some time to pull it accurately. Summary: Pros: - easy to assemble - Well built and easy starting - makes sidewalk edging a joy rather than a chore - sidewalk edges look great - bed edges look good but more difficult to do Cons: - Nose wheel mount digs into ground while edging beds - the debris shield does not stop debris when blade is angled - accurate sidewalk edging results in frequent contact between the sidewalk and the blade. Perhaps a guide could be installed which would follow the sidewalk contour and reduce the blade contact and resultant blade wear? Overall a thumbs up for those with long sidewalks or driveways. Jury still out in bed edging capability

Finally was able to use my new Christmas present! The edger was a pleasure to use. Assembly was easy. The fact that I don't have to break my back lugging around a weed eater with an edging attachment was just icing on the cake! Our house sits at the beginning of a road and is lined with sidewalks as well as drainage curbing on the road edge. So the added amount of edging necessary to keep the lawn looking good and the neighbors from complaining required an edger and the Southland edger does the trick. It took a couple passes to shore up everything because of all the overgrowth, but it handled it with ease.

I don't like to buy stuff on line, but I needed a new lawn edger and the price was good. Picked up this Southland lawn edger at my local Home Depot(free shipping). The box was in excellent shape and the Home Depot people helped me load it in my pickup. Read the instructions and had it all put together in under an hour, attach handle and wheels, add oil, oil was included in box, you need metric wrenches. All the nuts and bolts were in plastic bags, easy to find. Runs great, thankfully I don't need the curb hopping feature, it looks kind of funky. Don't fill the gas tank completely full, gasoline needs extra space to expand when it gets hot. Great buy, Happy edging to all!!!

        powermate
This unit couldn't have worked better! It took me about 10 minutes to put it together and started on the 1st pull. I like that you can adjust front wheel closer to a blade it give more stability in edger for those with harder soil I get this unit because it was the only one in this price range that had the curb adjustment feature and it worked very well, also like the option that you can choose the different angle 15 degree left or right. Next up will be to see how this unit performs in edging my beds. I would recommend this edger to anyone in the market for an edger. The massage to a Powermate please pack up those loose hardware in a ziplock bag so the hardware do not scattered through the box during the shiping.

        Only worked 1 season!
Start of second season wouldn't start. I am a 48 year old man that has fixed and maintained all of my yard equipment for 20 years. Called for warranty help and waited on the line for 40 minutes before it goes to a voice mail that is full so you can't leave a message at all. I would not recommend this product or company to anyone.

I purchased this item from Home Depot in December 2018. I started using it in march 2019. Book says it will start in one pull. NOT! I had blister on my finger trying to get it to start. I used high octane gas as the manual says. I fought thru the season and put it away for the winter. In March of 2020 I found a local repair shop that is listed as an authorized dealer for Southland here in Cincinnati. The unit would not start and would leak gas from the carburetor. They told me it needed a new carburetor and I think the cost for material and labor would be $96.00. They did the repair and i was able to use the unit for about 2 months and it did the same thing again. I took it back and it need another carburetor. I picked up the unit about 3 weeks later and used it until it stop working in the fall of last year. I took it back this year to find it needed a new carburetor, again. Technician told me the carburetor comes from China and said it is just like everything else that comes from there and it is not very good. Just brought it home and it is still hard to start and leaking gas as bad as ever. I contacted Southland via phone and waited on hold for 25 minutes and 32 seconds before someone answered. He told me to loosen the gas cap1/4 turn as back pressure from the tank was causing the leak. NOT. I would not give this product to my worst enemy.
