Questions & Answers

is this wire sufficient for a electric stove?

Asked by: cleester
It depends on the current rating of the stove; check the nameplate on the stove or the manual. If the rating is given in watts, then divide by 240 to get the current in amps. The 10 gauge cable can handle 30 amps. For 40 amps you would need 8 gauge, and for 50 amps you would need 6 gauge.

Would this be good for wiring a generator to back feed into my breaker box?

Would this be good for wiring a generator to back feed into my breaker box?
Asked by: Homeowner
No, the gauge used for generator hookups is usually number 6 or larger. Also, code requires a breaker box with a transfer switch or interlock to ensure that power can never be fed back into power lines during an outage -- a very dangerous situation for emergency workers. A generator hookup should be done by a licensed electrician to avoid safety and liability issues.

Can this be used for a 30amp dryer circuit?

Can this be used for a 30amp dryer circuit?
Asked by: rales
Please consult your local electrician. The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

The 10/3 cable actually contains four conductors; the fourth is a green THTN grounding conductor the same gauge as the black, white, and red conductors. The aluminum cladding is much easier to cut than the older steel cladding, but the technique is the same. First cut diagonally across the spiral, then bend to break off the cladding and cut if needed; I used a hacksaw plus diagonal cutters. Be sure to connect the grounding conductor at both ends, so that any fault current will flow through the conductor, not the cladding.
