Questions & Answers

Is the ampacity rating per conductor wire? Or for all 3 combined?

Asked by: Andrew
Amperage rating stated by Home Depot is not correct. Should be 75 amps. Rating is for each conductor, They are not added. in a 120 - 240 volt system, two of the conductors would need to hooked to it's own breaker and one is the return or neutral and is hooked to the neutral buss. The bare conductor is an equipment or safety ground to be hooked to the ground buss.

Can this wire be used underground? Direct burial

Can this wire be used underground? Direct burial
Asked by: Maxci
This wire is not rated for burial or any kind (not even in conduit). The above advice is based upon the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC). Free access to the latest version of the NEC is available online at www.nfpa.org/freeaccess. The NEC and local building codes regulate the types of wire and cable that can be used in specific electrical applications, as well as the manner of installation. Check your local building codes before you start any wiring and cable electrical project and be sure to obtain required permits. When your work is complete, always have it inspected for compliance with local codes to ensure that it has been safely installed.

This distance would have no effect on the ampacity. See the question regarding amp rating for a more complete answer.

Could I run this to a 100 amp sub panel from circuit panel

Asked by: Bryant123
Yes, as long as you limit the amperage with a 70 or 75 amp breaker and other installation limitations are followed. (not to be exposed or buried, etc)

4-4-4-6 Gray Stranded Al SER Cable (By-the-Foot) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 4.

However, be careful to evaluate the amperage specs yourself. HD claims this is good for 95 amps. However, according to the National Electrical Code (NEC) chart 310.15, I can only see it going to 75 amps. It is rated at 90 degrees C with an insulation type of XHHW-2. Copper with the same specs would be 95 amps, but not this aluminum wire, it is 75 amps.
