What is the different color cords mean

Asked by Sandra September 28, 2017

Answers

COLOR = means Nothing.. .. ..nothing functional or technical at all. Amp + Length + Grounded (3-prong) -or- Non-grounded (2-prong) specs is sole concern for what serves Best. Some outdoor cords are better suited for colder or wet environments vs others, and are specified as such. Color is a non-essential factor, other than personal choice / price. Popular (high visibility) cords selling now, are even 2-tone in color w/ stripes !

Is this cord good for a snow joe electric snow blower 18 inch, 12 amp?

Asked by Jess January 2, 2019

Answers

NO NO NO.. .. ..cord description here plainly states = 10 Amp --- your snow blower requires = 12 Amps__do the math. Never use Under amperage rated power cords for tools / appliances / devices. Equal or greater is best. Pay attention to cord Length as well --- amperage drops when reaching 100' ft. or more. Gauge of extension cord + cord Length all play into Max Amp sustained / capable by the power cord from the direct AC source. Specified outdoor extension cords, can also feature cold & wet weather environment properties for such use as needed !

will this work with a 13amp electric lawn mower?

Asked by Erica July 21, 2016

It's rated for 13 amps. But, electric motors such as your lawn mower create a surge upon initial start up that is higher than what they draw when running. You can try it and, if you are throwing the breaker, then you'll need to get a larger gauge cord. If not, you're probably O.K. Length matters too in ability to supply current to the device on the end. And, 40' isn't very long for mowing most lawns adjacent to a residence. For my electric lawn mower, I use a 100', 12 gauge extension cord. That avoided setting the breaker off every time the motor bogged down in a heavy patch of lawn/weeds/leaves when mowing. I recently added a battery electric lawnmower and find that much, much better to use than dragging a long extension cord "over the river and through the woods" while mowing the lawn. :-) You might want to consider that alternative. Long, heavy gauge, outdoor rated extension cords aren't exactly cheap to start with.

(What's this)
This is a pretty standard extension cord, but at 100 feet, it can reach most parts of your home. Every home needs a 100ft extension cord handy, and this one is a great value. 10 amps may seem small, but it’s more powerful than you might think. What can you run on a 10amp extension cord? 10 amps at 120v is basically 1200 watts. You will want to estimate 80% of that as the max capacity, so just under 1000 watts. This is all fine, but what does that really mean in terms of what can you ACTUALLY run?? Here are some examples: - 10x 100w incandescent light bulbs - About 30 compact fluorescent bulbs - About 100 LED bulbs - Toaster - Small room air conditioner - Vacuum cleaner - Dehumidifier - Blender - Hedge Trimmer - Weed Eater - Small refrigerator or freezer - Cordless drill up to 1” - Circular saw (7-1/4”) - Electric chain saw - 1x 150 bulb, large Christmas light strand (C9 incandescent outdoor) - 2x 100 bulb, medium Christmas light strands (C7 incandescent outdoor) - 20x 100 bulb, mini Christmas light strands (indoor incandescent minis) - 200+ 50 bulb, mini Christmas light strands (indoor LED minis) A standard home wall socket is 15 amps, so this cord should work well with every outlet in your home.

(What's this)
I have a bunch of extension cords, but all of of them are too short when it comes to using them outdoors. I used this to run a dethatcher machine, a drill and a jigsaw. I didn't run into any issues, even with the dethatcher which I thought would be pushing it with this type of cord. This is a "basic power" cord, meaning you shouldn't be running anything through it that's higher than what it's rated for. With this cord, it's rated for 10 amps max, 125 volts, 1250 watts. The cord material seems sturdy enough to stand up to be dragged around outside. All and all, a great cord to have in your extension cord collection because you'll always find a need to use it.

(What's this)
I wanted an extension cord for basic jobs around home and this fit the bill. It is a 16 guage 3 pin SJTW cord which is enough for my garden string trimmer which does not warrant a heavy duty cord. The feels well built and the insulation seems to be thick which is a good thing. I am expecting the cable to hold up for few years. For those who don't know what is SJTW: S -- service grade, should be good with common power tools e.g. a string trimmer, J -- voltage restriction of 300V or less, T -- thermoplastic outer jacket, W -- weather-resistant outer jacket, sunlight resistant and should be okay for wet conditions.
