Questions & Answers

What size copper or alum. wire is needed to connect a 100 amp sub panel in the basement.

The run is approximately 70'. The last 15' to the main panel is outside along the house. What size conduit do I need for that as well.

tank less hot water heater sub panel

I am installing a 27 kv tank less hot water system. I need to add a sub panel for the required 40 a breakers (3). I have a 125 a breaker in the main box - is this wire the correct choice to run from the breaker in the main panel to the sub panel?
Asked by: kevin
A 27 kv hot water system? I seriously doubt it. I guess you know that 27 kv would be 27,000 Volts.

Probably a stupid question, but can I cut off the gray outer jacket and run the 4 cables without that gray jacket?

Asked by: HomeGamer
No, the jacket must remain intact even if installed in conduit.

Can this (or other SER) cable be run from the entrance main service panel to an attached garage via a path running through a basement vs through the attic? Floor Joists would have to be drilled (1-1/2" DIA or better I assume to accommodate the cable diameter) near the top of the foundation wall and approximately 2" to 1' in from the top of wall.
Asked by: Norm
Yes, SER cable can be used in this application. It can be strapped under the floor joists and doesn't have to be run through bored holes.

(By-the-Foot) 1/0-1/0-1/0-2 Gray Stranded Al SER Cable is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from The outer gray casing was gouged open in a couple... The outer gray casing was gouged open in a couple of places. I can live with it because only the bare grounding conductor was exposed. Pretty sloppy handling of the material by some clowns in the shipping department. If I had not been pressed for time on this job, I probably would have sent it back. It would not have been so bad (and understandable) if the damage was at the end of the wire, but it was right in the middle! Otherwise, the service was very timely.

Completed a Kitchen remodel and added a sub-panel to control all the kitchen circuits and utility room. Very tough and rigid wire, I was able to maneuver it through the rafters of my 105 year old home and attach it in my panels with ease. Very well made, excellent quality wire. Each internal wire has its proper identifiers for easy install.
