Questions & Answers

Can this wire be buried

Need to bury approx 250 feet to two different sheds
Asked by: JDFarm
@TomB2 ; You only need 4 wire if you are planning to run 220 to the shed. If you are only running 120, then you use this 2-2-4 wire. You do need to put subpanels in each shed, as well as a ground rod at each shed.

Can i use this wire to run from my main in house to detached garage about 50 feet under ground and then 60 feet more thru garage to run 12000w, 60V garage heater?
Asked by: slc
12000 watts at 120 volts is a 100 amp draw ( watts equals volts times amps). Do not know how you are going to supply only 60 volts to it. You are at Max current for the size of wire And. are making a long run. I do not believe this size wire is going to be large enough for a 100 percent duty cycle of the heater. Even if it is you have nothing left over to power the garage. P.S Where did you find a 60 volt heater. In the US you have a basic choice of 120 or 240 volts for residential. S

can I run a new service from the main (200amp) 325 feet away to a barn (100 amp) with this cable, under ground?
Asked by: ed
Yes, you absolutely can do this. You would use the 2 hots plus the ground. On your sub-panel you would simply bond the neutral and ground together. Alternatively, you can install a separate ground rod at your barn then you wouldn't have to bond your neutral and ground together. As for whether this meets code, who knows what your area code is, but it will definitely work, and that was your question after all. 100amp is pushing the limits though. I did exactly what are suggesting, but only used a 60 amp breaker. Most charts have 2 aluminum wire rated for 90amps.

can this be installed in a pvc raceway underground

2/2/2/4 urd type wire
Asked by: mikey
The 2-2-2-4 cable you reference would not be URD, but would be MHF. Yes, it can be pulled into an underground conduit.
