Questions & Answers

can this be installed in a pvc raceway underground

2/2/2/4 urd type wire
Asked by: mikey
The 2-2-2-4 cable you reference would not be URD, but would be MHF. Yes, it can be pulled into an underground conduit.

Can this wire be buried

Need to bury approx 250 feet to two different sheds
Asked by: JDFarm
Feeding two different sheds suggest that these are subpanels so the answer is a definite "No!" You must have a 4-wire feeder to a subpanel.

Can this wire be pulled fairly easily through 1-1/2 inch PVC conduit which is underground? I currently have 2/0 aluminum direct burial which apparently has a break because I have 120 volt on each leg to neutral or ground, but leg to leg I have zero volts. My line runs from my house main on a 60 amp breaker. From that breaker leg to leg I have my 240 volts, but at my shop I only have the 120 volts, and no 240 volts. The wire runs from my house main to my shop 100 amp panel and then fed to my newest shop 100 amp panel. Has work fine for years now. I run my 240 volt 5hp air compressor, my 120 volt mig and other power tools, and of course not necessarily at the same time. Have never had a breaker trip from overload. Is this wire heavy enough for my above stated needs? Also, I want to splice this wire to the old wire which is good where it is currently spliced under my house which I had to do because of septic service backhoe cut years back. I am currently using split bolt connectors for the splices. Is there a better way? If so, please tell me. Any advice or help will be appreciated. You won't hurt my feelings.
Asked by: jedigene
Yes, there is a better and code compliant way to do this. You are currently using 3-wire URD to feed subpanels and that doesn't meet code requirements. You should be using MHF, a 4-wire direct burial cable. There are additional subpanel rules for outbuilding that must also be followed. Post those questions and hopefully someone knowledgeable will answer them for you.

can I run a new service from the main (200amp) 325 feet away to a barn (100 amp) with this cable, under ground?
Asked by: ed
The main panel is fed with 3 conductors. The subpanel you want to feed must have a 4-wire feeder so you should be looking for MHF (Mobile Home Feeder). This 3-wire URD cable cannot be used to feed a subpanel.

The thing that irked me is that I could not use my Home Depot credit card to pay for the purchase, instead I used Pay Pal. That seems very odd since my mail box is full of Home Depot credit incentives.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Entire roll damaged Special ordered 300ft. The price was good, it arrived on time, but when we unrolled it to install there were gashes all along the insulation. Had to return and rush order a second spool. It looked like a manufacturing issue, but could have happened while measuring and respooling.
