my kitchen hanging light ceiling box is broken. CAN I USE THIS box without cut sitrock?

Asked by bob July 16, 2020

Answer

The box must be attached directly to the stud. Please refer to the specification sheet as the the fit will depend on current diameter of the existing hole in the ceiling. https://meproducts.net/MadisonElectric/media/MadisonElectric/Documents/02229-Web-Specs_Drawings_SB-Fan-Fix.pdf?ext=.pdf

Please refer to the specification sheet on https://meproducts.net/MadisonElectric/media/MadisonElectric/Documents/02229-Web-Specs_Drawings_SB-Fan-Fix.pdf?ext=.pdf to ensure all of the proper specifications.

It says"Adjustable Depth". How do you adjust depth?

Answers

The ceiling box is installed next to a truss or joist. You can use a stud finder to locate them. Before you set the screws into the stud, you adjust the depth of the box. You attach the ceiling box with two screws on an angle through the ports provided as part of the box.

You can use it on a wall but it has to screw into a stud, so this won’t work unless the new location butts up next to a wall stud to either the left or right of the hole.

Is it good for relocating a light fixture on exiting sheet rock?

Yes, however you must cut your hole next to a stud or joist and insert the box through the hole and fasten it to the wood using the screws provided.

What is the UL rating on this product? Hrs? Wall, Ceiling?

Asked by John April 14, 2017

Answer

This product has a UL listed rating for 50 lb. light fixture support.

How many cubic inches is this ceiling box? [compared to the usual 20 or 25 cu.in. boxes].

Asked by Doug April 9, 2017

Answers

The box is approximately 4 inches in diameter by 2.75 inches deep so if we assume it’s. A perfect circle with no cutouts of the area, it would have 34.5cu in.... but it isn’t entirely round (one side is flattened) and there are several intrusions....so I am guessing it is probably very comparable to a 20 to 25 cu in standard blue box.

Is this the product I would need when converting a 6lb chandelier to have a wall plug feature?

Asked by Need2know January 5, 2016
1
Answer

So I assume you want to add an electrical plug/outlet to an existing chandelier fixture? If so, then the answer is no. This is just for light fixture/paddle fan installation. You would have to install another one gang electrical outlet box in the ceiling near the chandelier fixture.

I love this company. Their "old work" boxes are so simple, and solid, especially the ones for stud, and/or joist mounting. They come in various capacities depending on how crowded your job is. This was for a ceiling light fixture. It made the job super easy, once I cut the hole (actually, enlarged a previous hole). Pulled two cables, ran the two screws home. Took about 5 minutes. Likewise most Madison Electric products. I've used 1 and 2-gang "old work" switch boxes, with similar great results. Highly recommended.

Very sturdy and well made. I really like the mounting screws. I also like the 14 AWG and 12 AWG marked cable positions. The box is a bit expensive, it would be nice if these would come down in price.

These round wall boxes are great. They do NOT suck like every round wall box in my house. I had a contractor remove siding to stucco my house and when they did it, they pried off the old exterior light sconces rather than unscrewing them which ruined all the light boxes (it broke and stripped all the holes that the brackets to hang the lights go into). When the contractor rehung the lights, he used super long drywall screws to screw these really light wall fixtures into the back of the old light boxes. I now have heavy fixtures I want to put up so I have to change out the broken light boxes but the regular old-work boxes don’t have deep enough “ears” to accommodate the stucco. I bought these and they are perfect. I get to actually SCrEW them into a stud at the appropriate depth to accommodate the new heavy exterior wall sconces. Additionally, the holes that the brackets screw into are vertical (parallel with the stud) so They easily accommodate the horizontal dual screw wall mount lights that most light designers use for wall mounted lights these days. Every stinking wall box in my house uses horizontal holes for bracket mounting so these lights are always hard to mount because the holes they need on the bracket are already being used to screw the bracket to the darn light box. Not with these light boxes! Those bracket holes are ready and waiting because the mounting bracket that come with most lights mount to this wall boxes using different holes.

Upon replacing a bathroom electrical vanity light fixture, I discovered there was no electrical box, just anchors for the old light fixture which I had to remove. I had to cut a hole in the wallboard and made just enough space for the smart box to fill. It screwed in perfectly. Perfect solution without having to repair the wallboard that any other box would have required.
