Product Overview

The power is in your hands to keep your landscape in line – unleash it with Spectracide lawn and garden products. Our easy-to-use, fast-acting insect, lawn disease and weed control solutions help you tame lawn and landscape invaders with incredible pest-punishing power. Take command with Spectracide brand. You hold the power.Spectracide Stump Remover Granules accelerates natural stump decomposition without harming the surrounding vegetation. The easy-to-pour granules leave no odor and require no mixing. These granules speed the decomposition of the stump, making it porous. Once the stump has become porous, it may be easily removed or burned. Decomposition, depending on the size of the stump, may take several weeks or months. Prior to using Spectracide Stump Remover Granules, freshly cut stumps should be killed with a brush killer. This product works best when weather is warm and stumps are dry. To remove stumps, drill several 1-inch holes up to 12 inches deep into stump. Then into the side of the stump, approximately 3 to 4 inches from the top, drill a 1-inch hole slanting down to connect with the bottom of the center hole. Pour approximately 4 ounces of Spectracide Stump Remover Granules into each hole. Then fill with hot water to dissolve the granules. See label for complete directions.
  • Destroys stumps: accelerates the rate of decomposition, making the stump porous.
  • USE WITH BRUSH KILLER: Before using Spectracide Stump Remover Granules, kill freshly cut stumps with a brush killer product.
  • EASY TO POUR: Pour granules easily into holes drilled in stump.
  • STUMP BURNING: Once the stump has become porous, it may be easily removed or burned -- see product label for details.
  • MONEY-BACK GUARANTEE: Guaranteed results or your money back – see product label for details.

I would recommend this product as it is fairly inexpensive, easy to apply (need a drill with a large drill bit) and eventually stops any stump growth with regular application.

No, you would need a stump killer product. The stump remover product speeds the decomposition of already dead wood.

It did not do what I wanted it to do. It does not work on palm tree stumps. If the post is pressure treated I doubt it. We cant buy stuff that works anymore because it is used for the wrong reasons by some people.

The bottle claims that it will kill stumps/trees without endangering nearby vegetation (grass, flowers, bananna plants, grape vines, etc.) So far, this has been a fairly accurate claim as i have noticed NO dead or dying vegetation in the areas i had to apply stump remover. Trees have not grown back either

I am not sure about the big stumps. Mine was about 2-3 inches in diameter. Of course it did not "eat the stump and roots" but after about 4 months, the stumps was dried and loosen and I could take them up with little force.

Will this product work on the root system? I cannot cut down my neighbor's trees but their roots...

We had a Palo Verde taken down because it got too large and had branches beating on the tile roof and roots that were lifting the concrete patio slabs.. We had to have the company come out twice with a stump grinder and still had sprouts come up. We dug around the roots and cut them off a good 4 feet from where the tree stood. I then drilled a bunch of holes in the remaining roots and filled them with the stump remover powder. I then poured hot water into the holes as directed on the bottle. A week later, I repeated the fill process. We then filled in the hole that we had dug. That was a year ago and have not had any sprouts since then. It was well worth the efforts. I think you will want to dig around the roots and cut a section out of them. Then use the stump remover in the parts of the roots in your yard. If you were to just drill and fill the root with the stump remover, you may kill their tree.

I've had excellent luck with 50 % glyphosate to kill stumps directly. Its available at HD or any ag supply store, just read the label. It should not kill nearby shrubs or grass unless you spill it. BTW, I don't use stump remover, I just drill bunch of 1" holes using a milwaukee 1/2 drill, and the stump rots w/in 6 months. works on pine, poplar and sweetgum, not sure about others. I intended to use stump remover, but the stumps were rotten in 2 months- note this is in AL, arid regions may be a different story.

This stuff is designed with mid-large size in mind. Its a tricky question to answer since #1) no idea what tree it was and #2) no idea how deep the existing roots are. Some roots go really really deep and wide that they actually stiffle the roots of other trees nearby. You can try tapping a root with a drill & apply this to see if it works. You'll know when the root visibly looks dead, dry, and wiggles easier than it did

The hardest part was drilling multiple holes in the cypress stumps. I then filled 6" deep (7/8" Diameter holes) with this product. Added hot water. I will do a second application this week. In late fall I will cover stumps in charcoal briquettes and light. These stumps are only about 3" above ground level and hopefully I'll be able to burn them below ground level. I have a lot of unused top soil I'll spread around the stumps to keep any fire from spreading and a garden hose ready!

Bottle is designed to ease the application of the product as directed. You must drill holes in the stumps for proper application. I applied this to two stumps @ 2-months ago and will re-apply it this weekend. So far, no dramatic visible effects on either of the stumps. Hopefully the re-application will move the process along a bit faster. So far I'm not overwhelmed with the effectiveness.

I cannot say for certain if this product will kill the two stumps I am trying to get rid of, since I have only applied two doses in the last few weeks but I have used a similar product with success in the past. It is fairly simple to use, the hardest part of the application is drilling three or four 1" diameter holes in the top of the stump, and then placing aligning 1" diameter diagonal holes from the outside to meet up with the vertical holes. A good strong corded drill with a 12" long bit is needed for that. The Spectracide is easy to apply. Cut off the tip of the conical cap and pour the powder into top of each hole, then fill with hot water. Repeat this process a week or two later twice or three times, then wait a year or two. The stumps will turn black and decay. No worry of new shoots popping up, and if you aren't in a hurry, no need for stump grinding.
