Product Overview

  • Accelerates tree stump decomposition
  • Safe for use around surrounding vegetation
  • Granules are easy to pour and to apply
Spectracide Stump Remover Granules accelerates natural stump decomposition without harming the surrounding vegetation. The easy-to-pour granules leave no odor and require no mixing. These granules speed the decomposition of the stump, making it porous. Once the stump has become porous, it may be easily removed or burned. Decomposition, depending on the size of the stump, may take several weeks or months. Prior to using Spectracide Stump Remover Granules, freshly cut stumps should be killed with a brush killer. This product works best when weather is warm and stumps are dry. To remove stumps, drill several 1-inch holes up to 12 inches deep into stump. Then into the side of the stump, approximately 3 to 4 inches from the top, drill a 1-inch hole slanting down to connect with the bottom of the center hole. Pour approximately 4 ounces of Spectracide Stump Remover Granules into each hole. Then fill with hot water to dissolve the granules. See label for complete directions

Yes, it is an oxidizer that causes the stump to decay over about a six week period.

I'm reading recommendations that concentrated Roundup be used to kill the stump, then Stump Remover to rot out the dead stump. But will the Roundup kill nearby shrubs and grass?
Asked by: etc
I've had excellent luck with 50 % glyphosate to kill stumps directly. Its available at HD or any ag supply store, just read the label. It should not kill nearby shrubs or grass unless you spill it. BTW, I don't use stump remover, I just drill bunch of 1" holes using a milwaukee 1/2 drill, and the stump rots w/in 6 months. works on pine, poplar and sweetgum, not sure about others. I intended to use stump remover, but the stumps were rotten in 2 months- note this is in AL, arid regions may be a different story.

I don’t know. Try bleach and rock salt first to prepare the stump.

It's a very long process, it doesn't stick where you want it to (on the stump) and 3 weeks in, I don't see any results. I was hoping to remove a bush stump, poured 2 entire bottles of this, followed instructing (to flush with hot water) and stump

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This stuff works well just not quickly and understandably so. I live on a forest floor. from time to time i have to take down a tree or two. Stumps will sprout and its a mess when they do. I have been using stump remover for about 20 years and have learned how to apply so that it is very effective. The stumps when treated like i am going to share will not sprout and will die...a slow death. Immediately after I take the tree down(that day). I take a big drill with half inch spade bit and drill holes about inch close to the edge of the tree all around spaced about an inch and a half. Then I take a 1/8 spade bit and drill outside into each hole at a angle. Making a V. The holes allow water to exit but allow the powder to stay in contact long as possible as root system picks it up. So I use my blower to clean all the wood chips out of the holes. Then add water to the stump. Then take the stump remover and fill the holes in the circle leave the outside holes alone. According to the weather ie if heavy rain is expected i will cover the top of the stump and remove cover when rain goes to light. I mess with it for about 10 days. keeping the holes from getting drenched for that time allows the root system to absorb the stump remover. After that time the holes are ready to do the work on their own without you paying any more attention to it. It a done deal stumps are done for. I moved some leaves today and found a stump from 4 years ago it was like a shrunken head. It will be easy to pull out. Root system is dead too.
