Questions & Answers

Is the Spectracide Weed & Grass Killer safe around pets? I want to spray around the fence line.

Asked by: Norm
No, it is not safe around pets or small children. The Spectracide Weed and Grass Killer or any other "herbicide" must kill the weeds; the dead weeds must be removed. The chemical components do break down over time, quickly; the broken down chemical components are still there. I only use it where I have absolute control; no pets or small children can access the area during the process. The Spectracide Weed and Grass Killer works; the weeds must be in a growth mode and it must be dry for a couple (3) of days. This is my experience. The concentrate version must be mixed outside; do not use the kitchen sink; use gloves, throw away cups and decontaminate any spills.

How do u get the sprayer to work

Asked by: 198555
Be sure to pull the length of tubing out from the bottom of the sprayer handle . . . make sure that there are no kinks in the tubing. Once I saw this, it worked fine.

What if your dog has consumed some of the weeds or grass after treating and is becoming lethargic?

Asked by: virgee34
I hope all went well with your dog. I would agree with those who said take your dog to the vet. I only wanted to comment on the answer about MSDS info. I read and searched it & it doesn't say anything about pets, only that it's deadly to fish, or other water life. I don't think it's required, but i do think the info should be on the label of the product, AND on their website. The question & answers above regard how long to wait before allowing pets or kids in the area were very informative & should not be difficult for the company to post. Thanks to Home Depot for this forum.

I sprayed the product using a somewhat new Home Depot sprayer and after 1 day no wilting of grass or weeds after 2 days nothing not even a single blade of grass died. As I mentioned to the Spectracide complaint dept that I didn't realize it until the second day with no results that there was no aluminum seal under the cap when I opened the product. All of my adult, life usually once a year when I buy a weed killer I historically take an old screw driver to poke a hole in seal to help pry the item off of the top because the small tab on the side of the seal usually rips off before the seal comes off. In other words the reason That the product didn;t work is because I think someone used the product /took it back knowing the aluminum seal was gone. I don't know but there was no seal on my product I believe the product was replaced with water or something other than what I purchased. Thanks , David Emory

The engineers who design these kinds of things get paid WAY too much, regardless of how much they're paid. This thing is VERY difficult to spray. One of the whole purposes for using weed and grass killer for me is to save my back. But you must bend very very low to make this product work ~ the spray/stream is weak at best AND you have to have the bottle pretty vertical so stooping the entire time you're using it is mandatory if you want to get it where you want it. I don't know yet if it is effective. At this point, don't care. I would NEVER buy this again. I'll likely find a good patch of weeds and just open this sorry container and pour the rest of it out! Ridiculous!!!

Made sure to wait for a hot still day as the instructions said that the product would be more effective that kind of a day. Several days after application we have only about a 25 to 30% kill rate on very common lawn and garden weeds. Primary site of application was landscape rock around the edge of the house, primary weeds were various grasses, dandelion and thistle. Also sprayed the driveway joints with zero kill. Even the applicator was of poor quality and was constantly leaking on my hand while using. Spectracide is a little bit less than Roundup but it goes to show the old adage, "you get what you pay for"

I ordered seven gallon-size bottles back in mid-June, and received them about a week later. Unfortunately, one of them leaked in transit, but most of the product was still intact. The primary purpose of my purchase was to control growth and kill barnyard grass, prostrate spurge and broadleaf weeds in the yard. However, after nearly 90-days of using nearly five gallons of the product applied at over 60F and not disturbed for over a week, I have seen little to no affect on target vegetation. With nothing but wasted time and money, I can not recommend this product to anybody.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WEED BEGONE It was on sale and I used this for the very first time and IT DEFINITELY WORKS. I also bought a pressure pump sprayer to make it easier because using the sprayer that came with the weed killer can get tiresome or your hand will be exhausted from repeated spraying.Note: When I used this (on April 22) a week after (April 29) applying it on the weed, it was effective and made pulling them off the soil easy, much easy. In the image I uploaded you can see some are still alive it's probably cause I missed it when spraying.
