It tests outlets for wiring errors and is super easy to use. It has a push button on it that simulates a ground fault and will trip your GFCI outlet if the outlet is working properly. This item is handy if you do any wiring, and also handy if you are looking at houses to buy, just pull this out and test a few outlets to see how the house is wired. Excellent! Lifetime warranty, too!

I get different lights to come on at various times and haven't tracked down any discernible pattern. Sometimes I get "correct" and other times I get "open neutral." Doesn't seem to be bleed-through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This outlet tester is pretty easy to use, very straight forward. Don’t need to keep the manual handy or anything, on the back it has the “light indicator meaning chart”. Essentially it has 3 lights on it, on the chart on the back tells you what each means. It’s small, about the size of a typical vehicle lock/unlock/alarm paddle, maybe twice as thick. Very light weight. Myself being a garage door technician I am not a licensed electrician so I don’t fix electrical. But when working on a motor I occasionally need to prove that it’s the electrical at fault, not the motor. Being so compact and light weight, I always keep it in my tool bag for the rare occasion that I need it. Recommend for electricians, as well as anyone that works on and or tests electrical.

Most work basically the same way with 3 lights that indicate an array of possible miswirings that can occur in an outlet. They can even test GFCI outlets to make sure they're working properly. I was helping out with some remodelling work and was able to identify old GFCI outlets that would no longer trip in the event of a ground fault, making them unable to protect from shocks as intended. I was also able to identify improperly grounded outlets as well as confirm the new outlets had been wired correctly. Very easy to use. Just stick it in the outlet and 3 neon bulbs will either be on or off. Looking at the guide on the top of the tester you can determine what the combination of lights means. To test a GFCI outlet press the button. That should trip the outlet needing it to be reset. The grips are easy to use and insulated to protect you from shocks. This model has a CAT III 300V rating which I haven't noticed on other similar testers. It is also CE and UL listed. Good, inexpensive tool that can help you save time, money whether in new construction, remodels or even just to let you know if there are any problems in your home. If you'll be having your home inspected for any reason, this is a tool inspectors will use so having one and identifying problems before inspection can make things easier.

This Sperry GFCI tester is very easy to use and does an excellent job to ensure your electrical outlets have been wired correctly. I never realized how many outlets could be installed incorrectly. I recently helped to renovate my mom's house. I got this tester to check her outlets and was surprised how many outlets in her older home had not been grounded properly. This is a fire hazard, but is so easy to fix. Now I take my tester with me when I travel. It is small and convenient to carry around. I trust it to tell me when an outlet is not safe to use. I think every household should have one.
