Product Overview

A non-contact voltage tester serves as a key component in any electrical toolkit, allowing the user to verify the presence of AC voltage prior to working on an electrical installation or during troubleshooting without requiring physical contact with live electrical conductors. Engineered to specifications required by professional electricians the Sperry Instruments VD6509 Adjustable Non-Contact Voltage Detector allows for sensitivity adjustments in multiple-wire applications when precision and safety are crucial. This unit features an adjustable sensitivity dial able to detect the presence of AC Voltage from as low as 12-Volt to up to 1000-Volt AC and provides both audible (beeping) and visual (360° flashing red light) indicators to alert the user of the presence of voltage. It also includes a built-in flashlight. The fully insulated probe tip eliminates the risk of contracting live electrical wires while the patented battery check feature designed into the unit ensures tester and batteries are operating properly, virtually eliminating false negative readings. Applications include testing doorbells, low voltage lighting, security system wires, AC energized wires, quickly locating hot terminals in receptacles, pinpointing breaks in wires and detecting the absence/presence of voltage at outlets, circuit breaker panels, light fixtures, switches and motors.

(What's this)
Sperry Instruments Adjustable Volt Sensor Non-Contact Voltage Tester with LED Flashlight - VD6509. Powered by 1 AAA battery that is included. Rather then repeat the package information please refer to the photos with this review. No instructions are provided so, as stated on the package, refer to the Sperry Instruments website. I tried but did not find this model number tester. I was able to find another model that I believe is similar but without the flashlight: https://file.ecmindustries.com/-/media/inriver/SPR_TL_059.pdf When you live in a 100 year old home – with most of it rewired – occasionally I come across an original two wire with no ground and with no color coded wire covering. This non-contact tester lets me know which of the two wires is hot (black) and which is common (white), so I can correctly wire a new fixture and route current correctly from and to the panel. Very convenient and easy to use. Be sure to test it on a known hot lead to adjust the sensitivity and correct operation before using. This instrument is sensitive enough to detect just static electricity on your clothes, skin, or electrical circuit; so dial down the sensitivity to an appropriate level. (Now I don’t have to borrow my brother’s.) Lifetime warranty. Made in China.

(What's this)
As a DIYer, a non-contact voltage detector is a “must have” tool. This Sperry VD6509 requires only one AAA battery, which is nice given some of my other testers use CR-watch style, button batteries. The tool has a “patented” battery check feature to make sure the tool and battery are operating properly; however, I’m concerned about battery life given the handy LED flashlight is always on when the tool is powered on. It’s convenient that a AAA battery is included in the package, but it would have been nice if the battery compartment was labeled as to which side of the compartment is “+” and which is “-.” I know it will be intuitive for some folks given the spring side is typically “-“, but perhaps not for some. While the sensitivity knob makes this a versatile tool, it requires trial and error to set it just right depending on the application. Setting it too low, I may get into a box only to find a live hot. Setting it too high may give a false hot if other wires are in or stapled around a box. For that reason, I use multiple non-contact voltage detectors with and without sensitivity adjustments. You can never be too careful when working with electricity. The packaging claims this “works with: Tamper Resistant (TR), Weather Resistant (WR) GFCI and standard outlets,” but when I tested it on my TR and WR GFCI outlets, it either beeped in or near both outlets or not at all. The tool worked fine on regular and non-tamper resistant GFCI outlets after getting the sensitivity setting just right though. Depending on wall thickness and sensitivity settings, this detector can be used in high sensitivity mode to roughly trace wires, but this wouldn’t the tracing tool I'd use if I required accuracy. No instructions are included in the packaging although the packaging claims instructions can be downloaded from www.sperryinstruments.com/en/resources... I went to the website and this model (VD6509) is not listed under Documentation at this time. A QC code that brings consumers directly to the manual would reduce all the typing and manual searching for the instructions. Fortunately, the Home Depot website has the operating instructions on the product page under “Info & Guides.” Strong plastic housing with 250 lb crush-rated impact resistant ABS (hard plastic) housing makes this a durable tool. Overall, a decent product, but could be improved upon..

This is a very simple life saver (shock preventer). It's amazing how many times I have allowed myself to be shocked while doing electrical work around the house such as installing or replacing light fixtures, ceiling fans, wall switches and plug in receptacles. This device is all I needed (but never had until now) to make sure I never got shocked. It is so simple to use... just push a button for small flash light... push a button for testing presence of electric power (voltage)... turn a dial to adjust sensitivity... how easy can it get. You don't even have to touch the connections; just get close. It's also the perfect size to keep in shirt pocket using the pocket clip. About the size of a carpenter pencil, using one AAA battery, bright flashing red light and loud beeping; just how easy can it be?

(What's this)
Lightweight and easy to use, this Sperry sensor (model VD6509) detects much lower AC voltage then a typical non-contact sensor. A surprisingly bright LED flashlight comes on when the detector button is depressed. It uses a standard AAA battery rather than expensive button batteries and no screwdriver is needed to change the battery, as there is no tiny little screw to remove and lose. It has a pocket clip integrated into the battery cover so putting the clip onto a pocket can remove the cover, but it's held pretty tightly so isn't an issue. The ergonomics are good: the unit is easy and comfortable to hold, and activating it requires an easy touch with the thumb. I found the sensitivity adjustment to be awkward. It's a pretty shallow knob that is difficult to grip between thumb and forefinger, and, even though it has ribbed edges, it is hard to rotate using just the thumb. The adjustment determines how close to the source the tip must be to detect a voltage. While it's capable of detecting 110VAC several inches from the source, I was never able to reliably detect or trace wiring behind the wall. The packaging referred to instructions, but none were included in my package. I was able to download a copy, but they didn't provide much additional information. Overall it's a solid unit at a fair price considering its adjustable sensitivity and integrated (though small) flashlight.

(What's this)
This is the Sperry, model VD6509, non-contact voltage detector (with LED flashlight). This tester has some nice features. First, it’s adjustable, which for me, is an important feature. Often I need to be able to distinguish between the Hot and Neutral wires, like with very old Knob and Tube wiring, where you usually can’t tell the hot from the neutral (and I’ve often found that light fixtures have the neutral switched, which confuses the issue even more). With the adjustment, you can make the tester LESS sensitive so you have to get right up to the wire to tell if it’s hot (avoids false positive). Also, the tester auto-self tests when you turn it on. If you don’t see the flashlight, red indicator light (flashes once), and hear a momentary chirp, you need to change the battery (one AAA). The flashlight is always on when the tester is on. The tester will sense AC voltages between 12 and 1000 volts. One thing the full instructions sheet doesn’t mention (if you want the full instructions, you have to download them) is that you can partially press the ON button to both test the battery and use the tester. A full press of the ON button turns the tester on and keeps it on until you fully press the ON button again. This is actually a great convenience and keeps you from leaving the tester on by mistake. The tester requires one AAA battery, and Sperry was kind enough to include it. To install the battery, you slide out the clip portion and insert the battery (see Photo 1). In real-world use, the tester operated as expected. For the type of work I do, I like to keep the sensitivity set pretty low so I can always tell exactly which wire is giving me the positive reading. It was easy to find a setting so I could to tell which side of a Romex contained the hot wire. In addition, the tester has a lifetime warranty.

This detector was not helpful at all and I ended up getting another brand non-adjustable detector since this one was too sensitive and adjusting it was insufficient. Would not recommend.

This is my first SPERRY product but so far I am completely satisfied with its abilities. I found this contact/non-contact detector and thought it would be a nice addition to my pouch. I like the sensitivity adjustment and find that it goes extremely sensitive at just a touch. It’s ability to detect a live current is great and has both a blinking light and audible alarm to confirm the current. I also like the fact that I can just put it in my shirt pocket and carry it along.

I can't sing the praises of this little life saver enough! It has to be the best sensor I have used and picks up lines with ease. It has a great little voltage sensor that allows you to pin point lines or just crank it up and detect faint signals. The light is great as well. I just keep it in my pocket all day because the light is so good and last a crazy amount of time on one battery!
