New out of the box, smell of gas and oil in engine
Please advise? Greatly anticipating the receipt of my "new" Sportsman 1000i, upon carefully opening the box it smelled of gasoline. Further investigation revealed oil in the engine? Nothing looked unusual before opening the box. The unit was sold to me by Home Depot as a new unit and it appears that I was sent a reconditioned or used unit? I will not fill with fuel or oil and hope that I can get a refund or an NEW unit to fulfill the need I have for my purchase? If I will receive a unit in the same "used" condition, please let me know so I can get a refund. Please advise, obviously I am a bit concerned. Thank you for a prompt response, I need to decide what I should do?

    Very Disappointed
Like others...I had high hopes. I have big generators and only wanted this small one for small occasional task. It was very light and very quite running. Very impressed at first. I purchased about 18 months ago and only used it once or twice for a few minutes. So yesterday, I needed to charge my boat battery, so pulled it out, cranked up just fine and ran about 15 minutes. Walked back to check on things and it was not running. Checked gas and oil and all is perfect. Tried to pull the rope and its tighter then Dicks hat band. Engine appears to be totally locked up. Might have been my second tank of gas if that. And of course just out of warranty. I guess it will make a great boat anchor now! So beware, and have a backup plan....you are next! I wish the company had a way to verify how little time I have on this generator ( I still have the box and all) and would offer to assist.

According to the instructions, and all the stickers in the generator, the generator has a surge of 1000 watts and 800 watts continuous. I tried using a small 500-watt space heater during the first snowstorm in El Paso. The generator was not capable of doing such a thing. The space heater has a surge of 800 watts and uses 500 watts continuous, way below what the generator should be able of. Also, the generator is producing white smoke through the exhaust. I emailed the warranty, almost a week ago from the post of this review, with no answer. I will try calling in tomorrow.

Seems to be decent quality but died after about 15 minutes. You have to remove the side cover that is screwed in just to check the oil. It started surging then pouring smoke out of the exhaust. I used good oil and fresh non ethanol fuel. Guess you get what you pay for.

Really wanted to love this little generator. Liked the size and weight and seemed to fill a need nicely. Although, after initial One hour run time, first oil change and two hours later it would not stay running. Engine oil turned extremely dark with lots of metal shavings after initial change. The engine appeared to be seizing after one hour under part load @ 200 watts. Even used the recommended NGK spark plug... Took the shot in spite of some of the negative reviews. The little generator that couldn’t! Turns out to be true in my case. Cheap Chinese junk! Fortunately Home Depot has an awesome return policy.

I should have bought this generator 10 years ago1
After purchasing several other small (cheap) generators, I finally decided shell out the cash for an inverter generator. When I saw this model was capable of running on gasoline or LPG, I had to buy it - especially at the sub $500 price point. It came out of the box in good shape and it was very easy to add the oil and fuel. It started right up without any hassles on both gasoline and LPG. I tried them both, just to see how they worked. I plugged in my meter scope and sure enough, it makes a really nice pure sign wave, even when under load. I tried a 15 amp saw - it took it but I believe it pushed the little generator to its limit. Here is a video showing the experiment: https://youtu.be/Ng5g_xZ69RQ

Just picked this up a few days ago. My first thoughts were how good the quality was, the fit and finish of the plastic was surprisingly very good and not that brittle stuff that you would expect, it is the good stuff that turns white when impacted hard or bent to far, not as good as my Honda EU1000 (That someone wanted more than I did) but it is not $800 either. Not as quiet as the Honda but the same not $800. It is however very quiet, quiet enough to hold a conversation without having to raise your voice when right next to it. It runs smooth with no more vibration than the Honda. I would not let this generator run for 20 hours before it's first oil change like the manual says, I used conventional 10w30 oil ran for approximately 2 hours with no load then changed the oil, I could see some metal in the oil (That is normal for a new engine) . Keep in mind these little engines have no oil filter (just like Honda) and changing the oil is quick and easy, I will run it for another 10 hours or so on the conventional oil for break in then switch to 10w30 full synthetic for all future oil changes. Now for the one problem, it had an annoying little rattle on one of the side covers I just put a tiny piece of sticky backed velcro (The soft loop part not the hook) behind where the rattle was and rattle gone. Hope this review helps you, for under $200 I don't think you can go wrong. P.S. I also purchased the extended 2 year warranty for $25. Just in case.

This is for the 1,000/800 watt inverter. It starts easily, and runs more smoothly as I put more hours on it. It's not super quiet under load. When in eco, and not under load it's not bad. The photo I took was with eco mode off, and running a 500W halogen work light. The meter was about 6" from the unit. 88 decibels. Standing about 15ft away from the exhaust side, same watt load, measured 72db. But for 149.99, you really can't beat it.

On sale for $150 this is an excellent value. I'm at about 4,500ft elevation, and the engine does burn a bit rich, and cannot handle as much of a load. I tried a 700W space heater, and the engine struggled for about 5 seconds, then the overload light came on, and shut down. The carburetor is a small diaphragm type, so no replacing a jet to compensate. It handles about 500W adequately, which is less than I'd expect, but it's also not fully broken in yet. Also, the comments about the oil filler being "almost horizontal" are misleading. The filler is just like any other horizontal shaft engine without an extended dipstick.

On sale at $150, it's a terrific deal! I was impressed by the build quality of this generator. It started on the second pull and ran well during break-in. I bought it because I live in hurricane territory and this will be a nice addition to my other very large and heavy, less portable generators.

Purchased this generator for use on my scamp 13 travel trailer, it is able to recharge the battery and power lights and a few accessories and last a very long time on just 0.5 gallons of gasoline. It barely gets off idle when I use it and is pretty quiet, especially for the price compared to a honda or yamaha. Recently during an ice storm and power outage at home I was able to power a 32ft^3 french door refrigerator and my gas furnace with the generator! I just have to make sure to start one appliance at a time, but once they were started the generator powered them no problem for the whole day.

This review is for the Sportsman 1000 (GEN1000i) generator. Overall this is a great generator! I was a little apprehensive with some of the reviews but the sale price of $159 pulled me in. The only real reason I dropped one star is the ambiguity regarding the oil capacity. The manual that came with the unit states 10 oz. of oil. However the manual download link on the product page itself states 7.5 oz. of oil in the PDF manual downloaded. Then there are the random cut and paste jobs in the descriptions of other sellers around the web. Anywhere from 20 oz. to 30 oz. So I called the number on the box. The rep (buffalo tools) explained that due to manufacturing variations and translation challenges the actual capacity is in question (her words). She stated they are recommending filling the unit with oil until the bottom mark on dipstick (mark furthest from dipstick handle) is wet with oil. I did this as instructed and measured as I went. About 7.5 oz. of oil in my situation. Ok time to start the motor. Filled with 91 octane gas, (I personally prefer high octane in small engine devices YMMV) primed pump, slow pulled to reach compression point and then hard pull. Started on second attempt. Just like my honda (old EX1000) usually does. I let the unit run for some time unloaded to allow it to break in somewhat. Then slowly added load (variety of LED, halogen, motors - both drill and dremel) to the unit until reaching approx 700 watts. Then allowed it to run like this for some time before slowly removing the load. Motor seems to run strong yet there are noticeable audible "misses" (or hiccups) while running, whether loaded or unloaded. Not sure if this is the low oil sensor trying to engage with minimal oil in case or what...? On meter, the power does not seem to drop or surge when you hear these misses. Also, on meter (both spartan and kill-a-watt) the unit stays right at 60 Hz never varying more than +/- 1 which seems well under the claimed THD of less than 3%. I also plugged a cyberpower UPS model CP1500PFCLCD into the generator as a test. This model UPS will give me a hassle if the generator in question isn't putting out clean power and switch into battery mode yet this never occurred and the UPS was happy to stay in online mode. The manual states the first oil change can occur at the 20 (twenty) hour mark. I changed the oil at the 2 (two) hour mark and am glad I did so. The used oil (see pictures I uploaded) was some of the darkest I have ever seen from a break in run and the included metal flake was very impressive (shocking?). Moving forward with fresh oil I put another 2 (two) hours on the unit. Current hour meter count is 4.3 Generator is rated at 5000 rpm and ran in the window of 4300-4700 rpm both unloaded and loaded. I have not used the eco switch yet due to break in. Take into account for noise / rpm review. I will update accordingly in the future. Build quality is acceptable and seemingly durable. There were no problems removing and replacing either of the panels during inspection and oil replenishment. Fit and finish both seem fine. Weight of unit is approx 25 lbs. Unit runs very quiet. Current only real disappointment is that I didn't purchase two units during sale!! I would definitely recommend this purchase. I will continue to update this review as allowed by home depot website.

The Sportsman 1,000/800 watt inverter generator is a champ. It's only 6.6 amps output but that's all my travel trailer needs to power the lights and run the air conditioner. The AC is 5000 btu that draws 5.7 amps peak. What I appreciate the most is it has all the bells and whistles of the larger units. I purchased the 1000/800 Inverter RV generator from Home Depot, paid $169, also purchased the 2 year extended warranty for an additional $25. Been using it for 2 months, every time I bring it our to recharge the travel trailer battery the extremely light weight reminds me that I purchased the correct unit for my needs, the very low decibels are greatly appreciated and are on par with the much bigger and much more expensive units on the market. While it is plugged into the camper running at 120 volts I also use the 12 volt output leads to augment the travel trailer inverter.

The generator was such a great buy very easy to get it started. This is my first generator and not the last one. I love this one so much I am saving money to buy the one above this one. I hope to one day buy the sportsman 3500i generator when it’s on sale. I have no complaints about this generator. I have used this generator all around the house since buying. What a great buy great price, and very quiet by the way. This is one feature I truly love. Thanks for making such a great affordable product.

First impressions on the first day or ownership: - It came furnished with a phillips screwdriver, spark plug socket with holes for the screwdriver to act as a handle and a 12 volt charge cable with alligator clips. - It did NOT include oil so be prepared to get your own. - A little bit of oil leaked out of the air filter during shipment. Not a big deal but I had to wipe down the case and one of the rubber feet. - Filling it with oil was easy enough. Pretty much the same setup as the Honda 2000i where you have to tip the generator sideways to pour in the oil or have a sideways shaped funnel. To drain the oil you will have to tip the generator the other way and the oil runs down a little trough - messy just like the Honda but it works... - It started up easily on the 3rd pull. - It runs a little rough with no load, runs smooth under a load. - With a 750 watt electric heater it struggled to get up to speed with the Eco mode ON, it took about 15 seconds before it decided it needed to run at full speed. With the Eco mode OFF it didn't have any trouble when the heater was turned on. I'm not surprised at this, plan ahead and turn the Eco mode off before you fire up a heavy load. - I got this on sale for $157 and have no complaints thus far.

I love this generator. My wife gave it to me for Christmas 2016. I used it the first time for a 3 day cabin camping trip this summer. It was hot, maybe 100F, so we wanted to run an air conditioner. This little generator was able to power a 5000 BTU air conditioner (600-700W) for 4-5hrs in the heat of the day. We also used it to charge our battery box which we used to power our lights a night. This generator is light weight. Feels like 30lbs vs. 48lbs for the Honda 2000 or Harbor Freight Preditor 2000 generators. So its really portable. I posted a review of this on YouTube, if you are interested (link below): https://youtu.be/kq9gfSrtKsU

Very nice small capacity inverter generator. I ran this at idle for about an hour. Then took it on a boy scout camping trip to run my CPAP. Operated perfectly for over 10 hours straight. I modified the fuel cap to siphon gas from a 2.5 gallon gas can. I decided to change the oil after having about 11 hours on the engine. The next night I camped out with the cub scouts and ran the generator for over 12 hours. No problems at all. Changed the oil today and it was dark but not as bad as the first 11 hours of operation. I also added an engine timer so I can keep track of the hours on the engine in order to change the oil at appropriate intervals. This is an incredible value for the $158 I paid for it. Take a look at the photos to see the modified fuel cap and the engine timer.

Great little generator, used for a small generator on houseboat and travel trailer. Only supports 1000W for a few seconds, had to buy a smaller (800W) coffee pot to work with the generator. But all in all a solid generator to support recreational activities. As a bonus comes with a 12v charging cable.

Great little Inverter Generator, for $150 you can't go wrong. It started at first pull, just added 10 oz of 10w30 oil and gas (no ethanol). I will used primarily to camping trips. Looks like some people received a defective unit, I was lucky to receive a perfect working one. But if you receive a defective unit just go to Home Depot and replace it. Also this is a 4-cycle generator / 40 cc motor. I don't know if you have todo a motor break-in but did it (just to make sure), I ran it with no load for 30 minutes and changed the oil, the I ran it for like 2 hours with half of load capacity. You can find more info about motor break-in in the internet. I also like the idea that I can connect sensitive electronic devices to this generator (like, LCD/LED TV's, Game Consoles, etc.). I uploaded an unboxing video in youtube in case you want to know exactly what you will receive.

Unboxed it from the shipping box a week or so after I bought it. Noticed an immediate chemical smell. Opened the box the generator was in and even stronger smell. Looked the unit over and saw fluid in the pump bulb. The instructions say it ships dry. The unit started up and ran for 2 minutes, then coughed and started pouring smoke out the exhaust. Called Sportsman tech support--they said it was just burning off where the oil had been filled. It was NOT burning off the engine, it was blowing out the exhaust. They told me to run it 3 or 4 more times and see if it stopped. Next time I started it it ran okay for a minute or so, then coughed and started blowing smoke, then stopped running. Second call to Sportsman customer support yielded a suggestion to return to Home Depot if I didn't want to ship it to them for repair. I returned it to Home Depot.

Added oil and gas and it fired up on the third pull. Louder then the spec, I'm measuring ~65dB, @15ft 1/2 load, (450 watts). It's been running steady for 2-hours now in 8 degree weather with no problems. For the price, it's a sweet deal for a lightweight inverter, just don't expect too much.

I am writing this review just to cancel out the very inaccurate review from "Jj" posted on December 10, 2016. He could not be more wrong - this is definitely a 4-cycle generator, and it's extremely quiet - more quiet in economy mode than my Honda EU2000i is! The fact that you have to put oil in it (not use pre-mixed gas and oil, which you *DO NOT* use with this generator) means it's a 4-cycle (4-stroke) engine. This is *NOT* a 2-stroke! The description clearly states it's 800 running watts, 1000 surge watts - all generators are listed with the "surge watts" as their highlighted wattage; even my expensive Honda is listed as "2000 watts!" but only delivers 1600 continual watts. Not sure why "Jj" complained about that standard practice (and the info is right in the description). This is an AMAZING generator for the money, currently $158. I ordered one and it runs perfectly, currently in our pasture running a 250watt water tank heater in 15 degree weather. I came back to Home Depot to order another one only to find that "Jj" had given it an inaccurate review so I decided to post this - if you need a CHEAP generator that is quiet and puts out 800watts all day long, get this!

Quietest Generator I Ever Owned – It Does Not Run
New generator, ran for 10 hours. Starter broke a second time. It is going into the trash. Reply from the manufacture saying, “reach out to us for help.” I reached out for help, and they never reached back to me. No more Sportsman anything for me!!

                                          Great value, oil missing
I just received this generator and am trying it for my first time. I looked, then looked some more. No oil was included with the generator. They included a paper funnel, but no oil. Any 10w 30 weight oil will do. Fired right up after a couple pulls on the pull start. Very quiet on test run So far, I'm impressed except for no oil included.
