Our chickens were 12 lbs which was a little too big for the plucker. Still had to pull out some feathers. 10 lb chickens would have been better.

Died on the first bird! It was easy to assemble however when I went to use it it ripped my bird to shreds , didn’t even pluck the whole bird and then died. Ended up plucking 19 roosters by hand.

This is a great time saver. The plucker is not difficult to assemble in relation to parts and instructions. The only thing I would say is that the drum is a bit heavy when unpacking and assembling. As far as operation goes it works great for plucking when the bird is prepared correctly. It took me a few tries to get the scale just right. Too little time and low temp will leave several patches of feathers on the bird. 145 seemed to be the sweet spot from my experience and about 60 to 90 second scald. This seems to yield birds with very few pin feathers (almost pristine) I have a small farm, so far I have processed about 50 chickens, full size and a few bantams. I do batches of 5 to 10. Some things I have learned: Before you toss them in the plucker, take the feet off of the bird after you scald them (careful not to burn yourself) and remove the head as well if you didn’t as part of your butchering process. Makes the tumbling process run more smoothly. Once on a while the leg will get stuck as it spins, simply turn the machine off lift up the bird and drop it back in (don’t do this when it’s running!) After the scald I found that taking a few seconds to pull off the primary wing feathers and long tail feathers helped prevent the drain from clogging. It is about a 2.5/3inch hole in the bottom where the water comes out. When I was first using the machine every maybe 4th or 5th bird I would have to stop the machine and unclog the drain. It’s easy to do, but annoying. After removing the large feathers, I was able to process 10 birds without any clogging, so it makes a difference in relation to efficiency. The water connection for this machine is just your basic garden hose connection. The water is constantly on unless you turn it off at your faucet so keep in mind that your hose will be running and draining out the bottom unless you turn it off. Don’t run the tumbler without the water or you will be wasting your time picking out stray feathers. The water will start to pool under the machine and you will have a pile of feathers collecting under the drain, so consider how you want to handle the drainage. Also very important safety wise, I keep the machine power cord and the extension cord up off the ground on an old laundry line. This prevents potential electrocution so make sure you figure out a method that will keep you safe. I think this plucker is great once you figure out how to use it properly. Hopefully those little tips will help!
