Product Overview

  • Runs on clean, quiet and efficient liquid propane gas
  • 3250 running watts/4000 surge watts
  • 10-hour run time at 50% load on a common 20 lb. LPG cylinder
The Sportsman Propane 3,250/4,000-Watt Portable Generator can power common household appliances and power tools. RV ready, it is equipped with one 120-Volt RV plug, two 120-Volt outlets and a 12-Volt DC outlet for battery charging. A generator of this size is ideal for small camping or tailgating parties or to have on hand in case you need some temporary power in an emergency situation. It has a 7 HP 4-Stroke OHV recoil start engine. It's affordable but well thought out, with full featured options such as automatic low oil shutdown and automatic voltage regulator. It boasts an engine run time of 10 hours at 50% on a common 20 lb. (gas grill type) cylinder (LPG cylinder not included). A 5 ft. propane fuel hose with a regulator is included for your added convenience. The engine is surprisingly quiet; it runs at less than 68 db. This is a great generator for anyone who needs affordable power. Propane has several distinct advantages over gasoline generators. Propane burns cleaner than gas engines. Carbon monoxide emissions run up to 40% lower. Propane will not degrade, so you can keep several propane tanks on hand for emergencies and store them for an unlimited amount of time. Since this generator runs on propane you never have to worry about the fuel going bad or having the carburetor getting fouled due to degenerated gasoline - a common problem with gasoline powered small engines.
  • Uses a standard gas grill style LPG tank like the ones sold and refilled at The Home Depot
  • High altitude use: this generator is not recommended for high altitude use above 3,000 ft.
  • 7 HP, 4-stroke OHV, recoil start engine, delivers maximum performance
  • Generator runs on clean, quiet and efficient liquid propane gas (LPG), so you never have to worry about bad gasoline fouling the engine
  • 3250 running watt/4,000 surge watt
  • 5 ft. regulator hose is included in box
  • LPG propane tank is not included
  • Air cooled, AVR automatic voltage regulation, recoil start, low oil shut off, spark arrestor, full power panel, engine shut off switch, overload protected outlets
  • One 120-Volt RV plug, two 120-Volt outlets and one 12-Volt DC outlet
  • Run time equal to 10 hours at 50% load per 20 lb. of LPG fuel
  • Decibel rating: less than 68 dB
  • EPA approved
  • 120-Volt 27 Amp operation

An electric start could be added, but this unit would no longer be covered under the manufacture's warranty for any kind of issue.

Does this generator work at high altitudes?

Does this generator work at high altitudes?
Asked by: Rusty
Depends on what you call high altitude. Being propane it should work as the pressure to run it into the system is from the propane source. I have yet had a problem up to 10,000 feet. Above that I cannot say. I live at 5200 and it works every time here.

Customer Reviews

4,000/3,250-Watt Propane Gas Powered Portable Generator with Clean Burning LPG and RV Outlet is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 757.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from More than your money's worth! Started after 5 or 6 pulls the first time, one pull thereafter. Would not start my 1.5 HP big drill press, but Did Not Stall the engine when overloaded like this. Started and ran a 3/4 HP (7.5A) hand power saw (brush motor) at full load with no noticeable loss of power vs. standard mains electricity. Actual continuous load rating is 1350 Watts. Design and Construction has that primitive old fashioned "made in China" look to it. No fancy digital computer controls etc. but the governor worked well and precisely and is screwdriver adjustable over a small range and this machine never stalled, never hunted, never misfired. The best thing is that because of the propane fuel, I did not have to clean it up, drain gas, add preservative, etc. I just waited for it to cool and put it back in its box for storage, confident that a month or two years from now it will be ready to run in any emergency. At the price, this is a very good insurance policy to save the food in my freezer during a power outage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still starts and runs well I wrote the first review of this generator on this site. I've run it several night during deer seasons in 2010 and 2011 and on a few other occasions. i cranked it up Nov. 2, 2012 and it ran well. Went 12 hours or so on less than half a bottle of propane. My only maintenance has been annual oil changes. I did find a voltage filter at Fry's so my hunting buddy can run his CPAP machine and I can feel more comfortable plugging in other expensive electronics. (And the pictures from my trail camera look better on my notebook computer than on some dinky viewer.) When it is in use, I have it in a plastic dog house. The roof comes off easily for getting it in or out. Next thing is to get a long 15 amp extension cord and move it away from my shack. That will reduce the noise a lot. Meanwhile, I spent $100 plus on getting my in-town gasoline generator running again. Let the gasoline get old ... not a problem with propane. I've upped my rating of this propane generator to five stars.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worked perfectly until brushes melted The delivery of the generator was quick and painless. I hooked it up and it started quickly and ran smoothly. After adding battery, it is even more pleasant to start and run. I had an electrician install a switch in my electric panel to run generator during power outage. All worked perfectly and it actually generated enough power for most of my electric needs. During a recent power outage (3 days) it was a lifesaver since i have 2 freezers and 2 refrigerators. We were even able to watch satellite TV. After about 30 hours of operation, it stopped generating. The repairman found that the brushes had melted and ordered new parts. Beware, it only has a 90 day warranty from manufacturer. Since I bought it 5 months ago, all repairs are on me even though it was only working 2 days. Worked great while it was working. However, a 90 day warranty on a device that you may not start using for a few months (until the next storm) is very poor. I won't know until the next power outage whether it will stop working after a few hours.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I'm looking for a new generator! Most of the reviews I read before purchasing this model were positive. It had the features I was looking for, including the ease of using LP gas instead gasoline. Unfortunately I bought the generator over a year ago so it's no longer under warranty. During our recent state-wide power outage at the end of June I discovered that (1) the propane bottles would empty to the half-way point and then the generator shut off without emptying the tank (This happened on two different LP tanks) but, (2) I didn't need to refill the tanks because the carborator blew out with a bang before I had the opportunity to refill them. I plan to replace the carborator and sell the generator for whatever I can get out of it and replace it with a gasoline powered model. I can adapt a gasoline model to run on natural gas and save the expense of refilling the LP tanks. What an expensive experiment. The only good part? At least the generator blew out now rather than during the middle of a winter storm.

I purchased the first one 2 years ago for a home we own in Florida. This past fall we lost power for 3 days, the result of a hurricane the generator operated flawlessly supplying power to the fridge, and a couple of rooms, Ran it during the day and shut it down at night, no problems starting it. I had a 900 watt generator for tailgating that failed after one season of football, seeing this on sale for about $100 less than what I paid for the first one, was a no brainer to purchase a second one for tailgating and after losing power during an ice storm in the northeast. I have seen comments regarding transporting this generator, I purchased a small dolly and mounted it to the bottom of the generator, the wheels are small so just good for hard surfaces. If going to be used for camping etc, I believe the wheel kit from a compeditor would work with minor modifications, the basic frame structure looks the same

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything it claims to be! Product arrived 6 days after ordering. Delivery day was confirmed ahead of time and driver unloaded the product and wheeled it 25' into my garage. Driver very professional and courteous. Assembly took less than one half hour and I had no problem understanding the instructions and found nothing problematic with the instruction manual except for small typeface. Added oil and followed instructions for initial start. I did not have a battery for electric start so I decided to try the recoil start. The unit started on the third pull! Again, I did not encounter any problems starting manually as are described in other reviews. Try it yourself before spending extra money on a battery. Home Depot has the best price on this unit and with the added feature of free shipping and not having to pay additional charges for tailgate service who would want purchase it from anyone else! Also, the price decreased by $40 two days after I had purchased the unit and HD cheerfully credited my account with no questions asked!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad for the price. I have ran the Generator for a hour, so I can only give a small amount of info on it. Overall looks to be built well. I had no problems starting it. Took 5 or 6 pulls for the first start. After it was warm it only took 2 pulls to start. It is a little loud, but not bad. Ran a skill saw and cut a 2 x 4, worked fine for that. Put a 1300 watt heater to it, did not work for that. It turned on but the fan was turning slow. This unit is a 2000 surge watt with 1350 run watts. It should work fine on a refrigerator, and a few lights. The best part is it runs on propane. You can store propane for a long time, it travels well, unlike gas. Little heavy for my wife to move, but she can lift it and move it. They want to run 10w 30. It said not to put synthetic oil in it. Not sure why. I might give it a try after I break it in. So far so good. For the price, it is not bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As represented I believe the Sportsman Gen7000LP is a great value. At $850, shipping included, from Home Depot, on line. Understand that it is a 6,000 watt generator with 7,000 watt surge power. You can return, if unhappy, at any HD store. There seems to be no advantage having the unit delivered to your local HD. In fact, mine didn’t want the responsibility. Mine runs my HWH (4,000 watts), well pump and a few lights. If I turn off the electric HWH, I can run most of my house (less dryer and stoves…). Mine is hard starting. About 8 pulls, but then it always starts. Plan on getting a battery for the electric start, unless you have biceps of steel. Connecting a large generator into your electric system can be a little daunting. I recommend a transfer switch, about $300 to $500 additional when installed by a licensed electrician (about $200 for the parts). Alternatively, make sure you know what you are doing: like protecting line workers who are trying to restore your power and/or the need for a neutral, if using 2 120s and 240 at the same time.
