Product Overview

  • Runs on clean, quiet and efficient liquid propane gas
  • 3250 running watts/4000 surge watts
  • 10-hour run time at 50% load on a common 20 lb. LPG cylinder
The Sportsman Propane 3,250/4,000-Watt Portable Generator can power common household appliances and power tools. RV ready, it is equipped with one 120-Volt RV plug, two 120-Volt outlets and a 12-Volt DC outlet for battery charging. A generator of this size is ideal for small camping or tailgating parties or to have on hand in case you need some temporary power in an emergency situation. It has a 7 HP 4-Stroke OHV recoil start engine. It's affordable but well thought out, with full featured options such as automatic low oil shutdown and automatic voltage regulator. It boasts an engine run time of 10 hours at 50% on a common 20 lb. (gas grill type) cylinder (LPG cylinder not included). A 5 ft. propane fuel hose with a regulator is included for your added convenience. The engine is surprisingly quiet; it runs at less than 68 dB. This is a great generator for anyone who needs affordable power. Propane has several distinct advantages over gasoline generators. Propane burns cleaner than gas engines. Carbon monoxide emissions run up to 40% lower. Propane will not degrade, so you can keep several propane tanks on hand for emergencies and store them for an unlimited amount of time. Since this generator runs on propane you never have to worry about the fuel going bad or having the carburetor getting fouled due to degenerated gasoline - a common problem with gasoline powered small engines.
  • Uses a standard gas grill style LPG tank like the ones sold and refilled at The Home Depot
  • High altitude use: this generator is not recommended for high altitude use above 3,000 ft.
  • 7 HP, 4-stroke OHV, recoil start engine, delivers maximum performance
  • Generator runs on clean, quiet and efficient liquid propane gas (LPG), so you never have to worry about bad gasoline fouling the engine
  • 3250 running watt/4,000 surge watt
  • 5 ft. regulator hose is included in box
  • LPG propane tank is not included
  • Air cooled, AVR automatic voltage regulation, recoil start, low oil shut off, spark arrestor, full power panel, engine shut off switch, overload protected outlets
  • One 120-Volt RV plug, two 120-Volt outlets and one 12-Volt DC outlet
  • Run time equal to 10 hours at 50% load per 20 lb. of LPG fuel
  • Decibel rating: less than 68 dB
  • EPA approved
  • 120-Volt 27 Amp/240-Volt 15 Amp operation

Can someone tell me how difficult this unit is to start? I'm a disabled widow who doesn't always have someone on had to start it for me, does it start easily?
Asked by: FindsFeathers
The unit almost always starts on 2nd pull but it does require some muscle to pull it. Would recommend you look into an electric start so you don't have to pull it to start.

What kind of oil does this take

Asked by: Melody
Use 10w30 oil for the first 10 hours. Then drain it out and then refill with 10w30 synthetic oil. That will last for the next 100 hours if it's not really hot where you are. If it is hot, change it after about 60 hours.

Can this converted to run natural gas?

Nope. Runs on propane only. Too many things to change and not appropriate for most users.

We bought this generator for our travel trailer so we can make rest stops on long trips without having to hook up at a campsite. It has plenty power to run our generator and refrigerator. It's quieter than expected and light enough that one person can load and unload it. We have two 40 pound LP tanks on the trailer so there is plenty propane on board when we need it. There is a huge benefit to not needing to drain gasoline from the tank and lines when not in use. We would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a quiet and low maintenance generator.

I have a 500 gallon buried propane tank and wanted to be ready for the next Florida hurricane. My old generator was gasoline and having to find, haul and store lots of gasoline before a storm is a pain. Cranking on the old pull start was also not fun. So I purchased the 7000 watt Propane Sportsman generator with key start. After receiving the generator I purchased the oil and battery (not included) for about $100. Then, I had my propane gas company install a new regulator on the house ($250). Assembly was not bad. All went smooth and generator started on 2nd or 3rd try. The directions are not the best and should be re-done. I am happy with the generator and am ready for the next hurricane. For the money, it is good insurance and worth considering this one.

Previously, we have always purchased gasoline powered generators, as we have always had a place to store the gasoline cans safely that is not inside our garage. When we moved into town, with no outside storage space, we studied and reviewed propane generators for several weeks. Propane tanks are much easier to handle than gas cans, and the propane generators are slightly quieter. (Not a lot, but just a little.) The Sportsman4,000-Watt Clean Burning LPG Propane Gas Powered Portable Generator with RV Outlet fits our needs perfectly. It's RV ready, and we can store propane tanks safely inside the garage. When we go camping, my husband can lift it into our truck with no problem. If our power is out due to a storm, it can easily power our refrigerator and a few lights. I would recommend this generator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well I ordered this when it was the deal of the day, just before Hurricane Sandy was announced. Delivered in 4 days, just before the storm for which I was glad as I have been without power for 5 days now. It works very well. I don't know how to determine load, but I have been getting about 6.5 hours per tank running the refrigerator, tv,computer, and alternating the freezer and pellet stove. I love the propane as you can't get gasoline in this area and propane doesn't give the gas fumes and is safer to transport than gas. It is easy to operate and change oil. I do wish it came with wheels but I put it on a flat bed dolly and it moved easily.

Started on arrival and a couple times since then just to verify it was serviceable. Had to use following Hurricane Irma in 2017. After 30 minutes of operation I saw a puddle of oil under unit and shut if off. The rubber valve cover gasket was not sealing properly. Tried to order replacement gasket with no luck due to inadequate customer service from Buffalo Tools. Poor design to use rubber gasket in high-heat area. Spent a couple hours on line and found site called Generator Guru and ordered part from them. Waiting for delivery of gasket but not optimistic about future durability of this generator.

I put oil in it and left it sit until Father's Day 2017 when a storm took out our power for an hour and half. I connected the propane tank from our grill to the generator, and with three pulls it came to life. I connected two lights (one led and one compact fluorescent), a TV, and an air pump for the fish tank. Everything worked well and I ran the generator for an hour until our power came back on. I weighted the propane tank before and after and found out it consumed 2 lbs. of propane. Noise levels were not bad outside and in the house.
