You most likely can add to the existing hose. We have a 10 ft propane hose which we use to connect our outdoor propane grill to the propane tank of our motorhome. We bought an adaptor from Home Depot so we can use the fire pit during camping while connected to the motorhome propane tank. This way we do not have to bring the 5 gal propane tank along.
If you find a sturdy metal grill to place over the entire stove, you could probably do that. Just be warned that the bottom of your kettle might get black burn marks on it. I noticed that the lava rocks were turning black where the flame comes in contact with the rocks.
