Questions & Answers

wiring the surge protector to the main lugs instead of wiring to a breaker

i pulled the meter to kill the power and mounted the surge protector to the side of breaker panel and connected the leads to the main lugs of the breaker panel. Is this way of installation wrong.

Can this be used as single pole for 30 amp RV ( one black and white wire connected, cap extra black)

Asked by: LEH
I have one of these are work so I connected it to a 120v circuit and it does NOT work. I tried only one black too the phase and the neutral and I tried tying both blacks to the phrase and the neutral. No green light. I then connected it to 120/240 volts and the LED lit right up. I know the paperwork that Congress Edith this device shows connecting to a single phase 120 volt circuit but I tested it and it just doesn't work.

Can this be wire to the main lugs? The instructions & FAQ indicate you can. Doesn't wiring through a breaker make this a Type 2 and at the mains a Type 1. From Square D Website. The recommended installation of the SDSA1175 is to be connected to a 2-pole 20A branch circuit breaker (installed as close as possible to the main lugs or main breaker). The other way this device can be installed is by direct buss connecting it in a Square D QO or Homeline load centers using a QOSAMK mounting kit. This kit also includes hardware to connect the SDSA1175 leads to the load side of the main circuit breaker.
Asked by: Smitty
Hello, See the differences between the type 1 and type 2 surge protection devices. Type1: Permanently connected, hard-wired SPDs which can be installed between the secondary side of the utility service transformer and the line side of the main service equipment overcurrent protective device, as well as the load side of the main service equipmen Type2: SPDs intended for installation on the load side of the main service equipment overcurrent protective device ONLY. These SPDs may also be installed at the service entrance point, but must be installed on the load side of the main service overcurrent protective device. Regards, Customer Care Center
