Why on earth is this so expensive?

Asked by DJ January 26, 2021

No, it is just 3 pieces of metal (one of which is a template that gets used and then tossed) and a few screws - what you're paying for is the convenience of being able to do a generator hook-up that meets code without needing an external transfer switch.

Will this lockout work with the panel that i have attached in a photo?

Asked by Ricky June 25, 2020

Answer

Hello Ricky, There is not enough information to determine if your load center can use the HOMCRBGK1C. The catalog number in the photo is just the catalog number of the cover. In order to determine the correct interlock kit you need to provide the catalog number of the load center. I invite you to check our Frequently Asked Questions and use the FA274608 article. This article will help you to find the catalog number of your load center. Regards.

Hello Enoch, The catalog number for a generator interlock kit for a HOM2448L125PGC is HOMCRBGK1C. However, you need to field install a main breaker because the HOM2448L125PGC is a Main Lug convertible main load center. You have to install a QOM1 style main breaker. Regards.

Answer

Hello, The selection of the correct Generator Interlock Kit is dependent upon the Series Number of the Homeline load center. Any other series not listed below does not have a generator interlock kit available. The HOMCGK2C is compatible with any Series S, NEMA Type 1 (indoor); and Series S1, NEMA Type 3R (outdoor), convertible main, main breaker HOMELINE load center that utilizes a QOM2 frame main circuit breaker (150 - 225 ampere). It interlocks the QOM2 2-pole main circuit breaker with a back-fed HOM 2-pole (15-125 ampere) branch circuit breaker. A retaining means is also provided for the back-fed HOM branch breaker. NOTE: Convertible Main Lug Only load centers, that meets the description provided above, could also be used by converting the load center to a Main Breaker device. Regards, Customer Care Center

This kit prevents your generator from feeding back to the utility company and possibly electrocuting someone working on the line. The kit works by turning off the main breaker before the generator accesses your panel. Installation involves working inside your breaker box, if you’re not 100% confident in doing this, have an electrician do the job. My kit is for a 100amp panel so be sure that you order the correct kit because each panel is different. The instructions that come with the kit could be a little more detailed and the cost for the kit should be a lot less than it is.

Perfect...but a bit expensive for two pieces of sheet metal and some screws....................... This is an unbiased review that is unaffected by the fact that I received this product for free. As proof of impartiality, just click on my nickname and see the average of the ratings I have given over 200 reviews to date. This is a safety modification to prevent you from back-driving the power lines in you neighborhood with your AC generator attached to your home. It prevents you from activating the generator breaker until the main breaker is switched off and vice versa. Otherwise dangerous voltages can be present on the power lines that are being serviced by repair crews, including some lines on the ground. The kit is very simple and consists of two pieces of plate metal to serve as the lockout, one metal drilling template and three retaining screws with nuts. The first step is to remove the breaker panel's outer panel (6 screws) and attach the metal brace to the generator breaker, which must be installed in the upper right corner of the panel. The brace keeps the breaker from wobbling around so that the sliding lockout piece can be effective. One screw is used for this and is already in the panel. I highly recommend turning off all power with the main breaker before starting this task. Once the brace is in place, you use the metal template to drill small holes in the outer panel. This is the only part that needs some attention to accuracy. Otherwise the lockout plate will not function correctly. Once the 3 holes are drilled, you attach the sliding lockout plate to the outer panel using the three retaining screws and nuts provided. The screws do not hold the lockout plate solidly to the outer panel but keep it in position so that it can be slid up or down. Replace the outer panel, turn on the main breaker and you are done. The kit instructions were complete and easy to follow. This took me about 30 minutes to complete, but I did take my time with it. I noticed that some of the parts in the photos on the web page about this product do not look like the parts that I received, but they may be for another panel type.
