Product Overview

Introducing the newest addition to the Squirrel-X brand. Feed birds (not squirrels) and discourage bully birds with the revolutionary Squirrel-X MX5 squirrel-resistant bird feeder. If a squirrel tries to feed on any of the 4 spring-loaded perches, the MX5s integrated design shuts every port simultaneously, stopping racketeering rodents right in their tracks. The weather guard hinders squirrels from reaching the seed ports from the roof and blocks out larger bully birds. The durable, round design of the 4 comfort perches attract a wide variety bird species. The MX5 disassembles into 3 simple sections for thorough cleaning as easy as 1, 2, 3. Its generous 3.4 lbs. seed capacity lasts longer between fillings. The wide opening, push-down-and-twist metal locking lid quickly removes for effortless refilling. With a durable UV-stabilized polycarbonate tube, elegant dome design and oil-rubbed bronze finish, the MX5 combines strength and style to bring you the ultimate in squirrel-resistant bird feeding and your best defense against squirrels.

Can you use black sunflower seeds in this birdfeeder

Theoretically, yes. However, birds have difficulty getting seed of any type out of the ports. There are far better feeders out there for less money, including squirrel resistant ones.

Not a bad feeder, but it needs initial setup.
As shipped (see the picture in the ad), the perches are too close to the main body and most birds can not get to the seed. The perches can be pulled out to create a reasonable sized perch, but the problem is that beyond the first couple of notches, there is nothing securing the perch. It's unstable and can fall out easily The solution is adding a cable tie to each of the plastic 'arms' in the base, then extending the perches out as far as you like. Now, this feeder is used as much as our other one, but keeps the squirrels out.

The metal piece in the lower part of the feeder prevented birds from coming to this feeder. A few birds tried to land on it. Also the perches are NOT long enough for cardinals

The ports on this feeder are very difficult for birds to get seed from. Tried several different types with poor results from all of them. Retired them after about three weeks and bought different feeders that work perfectly. These are terrible and a complete waste of money.

Birds don't like it either.
This feeder definitely discouraged the squirrels but the birds don't like it either. Have tried 4 different kinds of seed and all of them just get stuck in the cylinder and the birds can't seem to get to the seed from the small perches. Have had it for 2 months. The squirrels are gone but so are the birds. Not worth 50.00 plus the cost of trying to find seed that didn't get jammed up

Was excited to try this bird feeder. It holds a lot of feed and is very nice. However, this design is truly meant to keep squirrels away....birds can see the feed and it took time for ANY birds to find the feeding ports. I believe most of the birds who used to feed in my yard stayed away from this feeder as they don’t want anything above them that prevents them from flying quickly away quickly. I returned it because we had significantly fewer birds at our feeder.

There are four perches for the birds are too short for the taller birds and a a wraparound perch would be nicer. So far the squirrels have not succeeded in eating the birdfeed, which is a good thing.
