Hi Wooddog, unfortunately, these are not available in lengths shorter than 44 inches. If you need a baluster that is 30-36 inches, the tops and bottoms of these balusters can be trimmed/cut to achieve that length. Centering the ornamentation in the "middle" of the baluster, and using these on angled walls on stairs, requires that the top and bottom be cut off. For example, if you need this baluster to be 36 inches long, measure 18 inches up from the center-point of the basket, then measure 18 inches down from the center-point of the basket. Cut the baluster at those marks, and now the baluster is 36 inches long, with the basket in the middle. If you have additional questions, we'll be happy to answer them for you. Hello Buck, We are unable to provide a detailed answer to your questions because we were not provided the model number of the item you are comparing the Stair Parts 44 in. x 1/2 in. Matte Black Single-Basket Metal Baluster to. However, the Stair Parts Baluster is made of Aluminum alloy for durability, not iron, which may account for the price difference. Thanks for shopping with us at Home Depot.
Hi Chrissy, take a look at this baluster: The 1/2 in. Matte Black Double Twist Baluster #202088477. It's essentially the basket baluster without the basket. If you have additional questions or need more information, let us know, and we'll reply as fast as we can. Thank you.

They are powdercoated already with textured finish. Paint should stick if you use the correct stuff.
they do have licensed contractors you can hire, but these can be done by the average handy person. there are many videos online that can show you how to install them. they are a lot easier than you might expect.
Drill hole. Shoe fits on top and bottom
You drill a 5/8" hole into the tread and these sit in that. Use construction adhesive to hold it in.
