The fitting matched the rail perfectly. Light sanding and stain was all that was needed. I attached it to the rail with wood glue, clamped and secured with screws from the bottom. The rail and opening cap were mounted on a board and then attached to a pony wall next to the stairs. The photo revels more contrast between the rail and the cap than is evident to the eye.

Taller profile than hand rail
The shape profile of the fitting is taller than the railing it is supposed to match by about .060", therefore sanding will be required and oak is hard!
