Yes, this can be stained on either side. A box tread is a stair tread with a wall on both sides of the staircase. This tread does not have a bull nose. It is not listed if it comes with knots. A matching box newel and hand rail will need to be selected by the installer as the color is also chosen by the installer. A recommendation cannot be made as it is up to the installer to select what is appropriate to the installer's preferences.

Worth. Every. Penny. These are absolutely beautiful, high quality, exceptionally made stair treads. We sanded them out of due diligence but they were already smooth and perfect upon arrival. For a finish, we have put two coats of clear satin poly which brought out the colors in the wood beautifully (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-gal-Clear-Satin-Oil-Based-Floor-Finish-Polyurethane-130231/100192334). The treads took very little stain; we have most of our gallon left after about 100 square feet of flooring. Thanks to Stairtek for these outstanding treads! (Our image is of the treads half finished. Those in the background have no finish; those in the front have one coat of the varnish.)

I bought the treads to upgrade my staircase from contractor carpeted to hardwood. I stained the treads with Varathane Dark Walnut, put 3 coats of fast-drying polyurethane on them for protection and made new risers out of 1/2" MDF, which I painted with two coats of Behr Marquee Ultra White. All products available at Home Depot. The treads can come with damages in the visible areas. I placed two orders, one order for 1 tread to practice on and one order for 14 treads. 100% of the first order was damaged and 14% of the second order. However, that was no problem as Home Depot takes them back without asking questions. These damages did not happen during transportation. They were clearly caused during manufacturing. How a damaged product with such obvious failures passes QC is a mystery to me. I recommend that you check each tread thoroughly before doing anything with them. Another visible irregularity surfaced after I stained the treads. Some machining marks became visible that looked as if caused by the rollers that move the wood through the automated machinery in the factory. This type of cosmetic blemish lends an industrial look to the surface. You will not get a top notch tread for the money. But you will get a tread that is worth its money. I finished my staircase renewal project at almost 1/5 of the cost that a professional had quoted me. I learned a lot about staining and cutting the treads to length with the Stairtek tread template, which I also highly recommend.
