Q:I don't think this is the right tool for me to cut 1/8 inch thick plexiglass or acrylic sheeting....if not, can you tell me of a better cutting tool, please? Thanks!
by|Feb 27, 2024
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  For cutting plexiglass 1/8” thick or thinner, the utility knife should work well. For more intricate cuts, a Dremel or jigsaw would be a better choice.

            Nothing New Under The Sun
In 1970 I walked into CC Lumber in Corpus Christi, Texas and lay down my dollars for my first Stanly 10-099 utility blade, just like my Dad's. The old original has seen me through 40+ years of drywall, framing and carpentry. Looks old, feels good in the hand. As long as I feed it Stanley replacement blades and clean it up from time-to-time it works (and has never drawn blood). Cannot say more for a useful tool than that.

blade does not fit correctly into carrier
As was pointed out in several other reviews, the included blades do not actually fit into the carrier correctly. I assume that the carrier was designed for blades that are a little narrower than the ones that are included nowadays. It is actually possible to force the blade into the carrier using pliers (i used some vice grip style I had handy), and once you have it seated it is possible to reassemble the knife. However, I would bet money that the edge on the other half of the blade (the part that you have to force into the carrier) is ruined. I do not look forward to the process of removing the blade from the carrier once it is too dull to use.

                Great knife
I'm a fridge delivery guy and this knife cuts through the thick packaging box like butter. Made my work fast and easier. It is safe and build to last.

These have been my favorite utility knives by far, until now. I recently bought 2 of these. One of these knives works good but has globs of paint on the top of the cutting end (not a big deal). The other one has a slide that will not accept its own blades (big deal). I also noticed a small flaw in the cast of the handle (not a big deal). Comparing these 2, I found the date of the castings to be different as well as the castings. Some of these are major differences. So, I decided to compare all my Stanley Classic 99's knives, new and old. The new ones have a very thin casting, and less contour giving them a different grasp in the hand (a poorer grasp). The older knives have a thicker casting, more of a contour, a better grip, and they have never disappointed me. Stanley needs to go back to previous manufacturing methods on the casting, the slide, and the paint.

                    Stanley did it again !!
Everytime I visit my local Home Depot, I always seem to gravitate to the utility knives in the tools section of the store. I have always admired the design of the Stanley Classic 99 (Model No. 10-099). The handle feels so super smooth in the hand, is not as big or bulky as some others with the blade offering 5 retractable positions. Some very important highlights are: * Smooth handle with a slender profile offering a comfort grip * Extra blade storage inside handle * Screw locking design prevents the blade from popping out during heavy-duty cutting tasks What has always attracted me to this particular design is the minimalist appeal. Other fancy utility knives compete for your attention by offering gee-whiz features such as quick blade change or some fancy way they fold (and that's fine to add to your collection). This knife does not attempt to wow you with that. What this offers is simplicity in itself. I've seen many interesting designs over the decades of my life and love them so much! If I were to summarize this review in just two words it would simply be, "nothing fancy"! Recommended: Highly Rated for everyone (who enjoys the pleasure of such a classic utility knife)

I haven’t actually cut any boxes up yet, but, the retraction piece does not slide up and down easily. The item does not seem very sturdy either. Since it was only $6 I will try it out and see what happens. Not really impressed right now though.
