Questions & Answers

how do I load a blade

Asked by: shaun007
The blade comes pre-loaded in the retractable slider from the factory, and it's ready to use. To replace the blade, just remove the single screw and the separate the 2 metal halves of the handle. Lift up the slider assembly and you can insert in another blade. Also remember the blades are double-ended, so you can flip it around once for fresh edge before disposing. Spare blades come or can be be stored in the handle too.

how do I get this to work? The blade isn't already loaded? Do I have to unscrew it first?

Classic Retractable Blade Knife is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Defective item I bought this utility knife but when I went to use it I found it did not have a button on it to slide the blade out of the handle... It's just a paper weight not worth the trouble to try and return

I especially love the cast metal durability and how you can store up to 4+ spare blades inside the back handle. Home Depot used to sell these painted in their store's bright orange color. (catalog# 377784, UPC 711688200377). It put me off at first until I realized how much easier they are to find laying about in a cluttered work area!! Still, I must have bought 20+ of these over the years mostly to replace lost knives. During the peak of our 1980's mail order business, I had one customer report they one packed in with their order that I'm sure fell in there by accident. Such memories!!

I recently bought 2 of these. One of these knives works good but has globs of paint on the top of the cutting end (not a big deal). The other one has a slide that will not accept its own blades (big deal). I also noticed a small flaw in the cast of the handle (not a big deal). Comparing these 2, I found the date of the castings to be different as well as the castings. Some of these are major differences. So, I decided to compare all my Stanley Classic 99's knives, new and old. The new ones have a very thin casting, and less contour giving them a different grasp in the hand (a poorer grasp). The older knives have a thicker casting, more of a contour, a better grip, and they have never disappointed me. Stanley needs to go back to previous manufacturing methods on the casting, the slide, and the paint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where do these hide? Somewhere, along with the orphaned socks and all the pencils that middle school students lose, there is a sea of Stanley Utility Knives. Other companies have copied these or knocked them off in one form or another for at least 30 years, but Stanley still makes the best ones. I like to have several around the shop, hng from a peg wherever I might want to use one. I keep one in my desk drawer as well, and in the glove box, and a couple that I put in my pockets. In fact, sitting at my desk right now, I can see three. But it's a good bet that the next time I need one, they will all be hiding. So I buy a new one every now and then just to appease the gods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 99e knife I have been using this knife for 30 years for construction electric. it is great, none are better. The Stanley blades do not fit right. The two hole blades are the wrong type, I have used the lenox four hole bades for years and they work great. I was in a bind today and bent the small hook on the back of the slider to make my stanley blades fit and now it wont close all the way. I will buy two new ones tomorrow and make sure I always have the four hole blades that fit the 99e. I have used other knives but this is the best for a kline leather tool belt. the knife fits in the front pocket next to my stripers perfect and is ready to use in seconds and goes back just as fast, all without looking. wont ever use anyting else for work. also is strong for prying and hammering lol.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Problems Frustrating. Stanley must have manufacturing tech issues. This is the 2nd knife I bought that the blades that came with the knife did not slide into the holder at all. I am very mechanical and couldn't do it. The Stanley customer service video on how to replace the blade is nothing short of awful. No close-ups of the insides, etc. I am giving up and taking it back.
